In Todd Almond’s I’m Almost There, the road to love becomes a full-blown odyssey complete with vampires, cults, catastrophic neighbors, and emotional detours. Urban Odysseys takes that same epic energy to the streets of the city, where a simple errand can spiral into an all-night quest through chaos, coincidence, and existential panic.

From After Hours to Good Time, these films turn the urban landscape into a labyrinth, proving that sometimes getting across town can feel as perilous as crossing the sea. 🚕🌃

🗓️ May 29—Jun 4
🎞️ Good Time, The Daytrippers, Tokyo Godfathers, Güeros, Arzé, Where Is the Friend's House?, Bicycle Thieves, Laila’s Birthday, After Hours

Love at first sight is easy. Letting it through the front door? That’s where the nightmare begins. 👹☕️

We caught up with Todd Almond about I’m Almost There, his hilariously unhinged musical odyssey featuring cults, vampires, demonic cats, and the terrifying possibility of actual happiness.

Dance 🤝 film. Two particular screenings in FilmAfrica ought to draw our DanceAfrica crowd:

First is the film Germaine Acogny - The Essence of Dance (screening on 5/26). Acogny has danced at BAM as part of 5 different productions over the course of two decades. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with Acogny's daughter Ghyslaine de Souza.

Second is Mississippi Masala, famously directed by Mira Nairand featuring Dr. Stephen Rwangyezi, the Executive Director of the Ndere Cultural Center in Kampala, Uganda—and yes, it's the Ndere Troupe performing live on the Opera House stage this weekend!

Join us as we celebrate the nation’s largest celebration of African diasporic dance and music—and don't sleep on FilmAfrica and African Film Fest's impressive slate of screenings.

Today BAM is proud to announce the Robert W. Wilson Mural Project, a new public art initiative that celebrates the work of three artists with murals displayed successively over three years. The program revitalizes a site on Brooklyn’s Lafayette Avenue across from the Howard Gilman Opera House.

The Mural Project supports contributing artists in their first major public art commission in New York City. Public art curator Alessandra Gómez assembled an extensive list of artists for a multi-phased selection process she led with art consultant Jesse Hamerman. Three artists were awarded commissions– Omari Douglin, Alanna Fields and Jean-Pierre Villafañe–and, in that order, their murals will be displayed consecutively from 2026-2028.

Douglin’s mural, Junction (pictured) is the first to debut.

The mural project’s curatorial framework invited the artists to create designs inspired by the BAM Hamm Archives, a rich and publicly available collection of photos, drawings, videos, and documents outlining the deep cultural history of BAM and its Brooklyn neighborhood. All murals will be hand-painted by Colossal Media.

A libretto in poems, music in 13 time, and a set built out of postal bins. Oh, and three of the most delightful artistic collaborators (and real-life friends) you'll ever meet.

Elaine Sexton (librettist), Laura Kaminsky (composer), and Charles Renfro (design) joined us in front of City Hall's statue of Benjamin Franklin to talk about their new opera, The Post Office, coming to BAM tomorrow.

It was a magical, transportive evening we had with Ashley Jackson and Helga Davis. The music, the conversation, and the vibes were all immaculate.

The Post Office | The ghost of Benjamin Franklin, the first US Postmaster General, is drawn into a thoroughly contemporary conflict among co-workers in a one-room post office about gay marriage, free speech, racial and class divides, and democracy itself in a provocative new opera by composer Laura Kaminsky (As One) and poet/librettist Elaine Sexton (Site Specific). Produced by American Opera Projects and directed by Kevin Newbury, The Post Office makes its New York premiere featuring a cast of five singers and piano, and a set designed by Charles Renfro, a partner in the distinguished architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro (The High Line, The Shed).

Join us for a Q&A with the creators of The Post Office and Jeffrey Brown of PBS NewsHour following the performance on Sun, May 17.
