My collage works explore the complex emotions of Black girls’ experiences in the American South. Inspired by historical research and personal memory, these pieces reveal the internal elegance of subjects who are often iterations of myself at various ages. By navigating the tension of being artistically inclined, Black, and female, I aim to ground my work in both the past and the present.

The visual language here is deeply symbolic. The recurring black and white stripes represent the pattern of Black expression being interjected by Southern expectations, while the subjects’ hesitant expressions reflect a deep awareness of their environment. In contrast, the vibrant, multi-textured flared skirts signify an inherent playfulness that pushed against the restrictive household of my youth.

Descending from the lineage of artists like Romare Bearden and Faith Ringgold, I utilize what is immediately available—cloth, graphite, and paint—to relay ideas about the world. By incorporating facets of my personal life into the canvas, I create a layered narrative that honors the “psychology of place” and the enduring spirit of my subjects.

In 2021, we had the honor of filming with the late Warachal Eileen Faison during Marcus Jansen’s () survey exhibition, “Two Decades of Relevance,” at .

Warachal speaks here about her connection to Falling Statue #2—a piece that deconstructs the myth of the “Western hero” and confronts the painful reality of colonial and confederate history. It’s a reminder that art isn’t just for viewing; it’s a tool for deconstruction and truth-telling.
