Coming home to Prospect Heights 🎶

I used to call this neighborhood home, and on September 28th I'm heading back to spin an all-vinyl set at Bierwax — a rare one, so I wanted to share it here.

Expect a mix of soulful sounds from the global underground: afrobeat, latin, R&B, rare groove, disco, and deep house, all pulled straight from wax. Good people, good drinks, good vibes — come through and soak it in.

This Friday, In the Pocket comes to you from the Bushwick studio — kicking off Labor Day Weekend 2026 with a set full of songs about working, hustling and grinding, plus a couple of tracks with September itself on the mind.

Deep funk, disco, boogie and hip-hop grit collide with sharp edit-culture flips and vintage jazz-funk. The geography runs wide: Brooklyn, Detroit, Philadelphia and the Bronx, out to Afrobeat threads in Lithuania, Germany and Zimbabwe. Graft, grind and groove to carry you into the weekend.

The set spans continents and decades: township jazz drifting into Venezuelan Afro-Latin sounds, deep Brazilian soul, golden-era Lagos Afrobeat, Arabic synth-funk, Southern spiritual jazz, a dedicated trio built around Al Green — two covers and one original, back to back — and a quiet nod to Dolly Parton along the way. This Friday, In the Pocket continues its Upstate Vibin' summer series, broadcasting live from the Great Northern Catskills.

Expect a wide-ranging set of fresh 2026 heat: Soul Supreme's samba-flipped tribute marking GAMM's 200th release, Coflo's Afro-Cuban house edits, a Balearic reunion from Kiko Navarro, DJ Pippi and Willie Graff on Afroterraneo Music, and Ed Motta's first Portuguese-language material in thirteen years off his upcoming Toc-Toc album (Dwitza/MPS). There's a brand new Sam Pounds and Family Company cut on Death Row Records, a Fred Everything and Teuteu deep house session landing on Winding Road Records this very week, and plenty more woven through Afrobeat, Brazilian, broken beat and soul.

We're moving wide — hushed neo-soul, deep New York salsa and guaguancó rooted in the Nuyorican diaspora, a swing through Miami's Latin-funk underground, Brazilian jazz fusion, and a pocket of 1970s smooth jazz out of Western New York, Buffalo and Rochester's own — a personal nod to where it all started.

This week's Rough Mix sits in that space where breakbeat, Afrobeat and dusty American soul all feel like the same language. Tony Allen and Francis Bebey bring the Lagos and Accra end of things, Trussell and a handful of sharp reworks and edits carry the funk and disco thread, and Willie Colón and Quantic Soul Orchestra anchor a deep run through Latin and reggae territory.

As ever, genre lines don't mean much here — it's geography, the dig, and the through-line between records that were never meant to sit together.

Fresh music too — Ed Motta returns with his first Portuguese-language single in thirteen years, Christian Prommer gets reworked by Crackazat, and Louis Baker previews a track from his forthcoming album. This Friday, In the Pocket keeps rolling with the Upstate Vibin' summer series — broadcasting live from the Great Northern Catskills.
This one moves wide. Fresh Brazilian boogie and MPB from Curió Curió ahead of their debut on Mr Bongo, a new Berlin-meets-Bristol collaboration from Clara Hill and Crackazat via Sonar Kollektiv, and brand new material from Bruno Berle on Far Out Recordings. Jeff Dynamite steps out with a cinematic soul cut off his new album for Mighty Eye Records, Nao Yoshioka previews two sides of her forthcoming Sweet Soul Records release, and Manchester's The 7:45s bring their disco-soul via LRK Records.
We also dig deep into the crates for a long-lost 1972 session from Dollar Brand and Don Cherry, only now getting its first release outside Japan. Layer in Afro-Cuban electronics, South African jazz-funk, Ghanaian afro-fusion, Nubian retro-pop, rare Tokyo city pop, and a little Arabic disco dug up from a Paris B-side, and that's the shape of the show — global, unhurried, still deep in the pocket.
