Much love and respect to my partner and spouse, Berit Johnson, who is very deservedly receiving the 2024 Honorary Award for Outstanding Stage Manager from the League of Independent Theater!

I've been rooting for them on this as long as the award has existed, so I'm quite overjoyed.

The League of Independent Theater has announced the 2024 New York Independent Theater Award recipients, highlighting exceptional leadership, service, and artistry in the indie and off-off Broadway community.

I have just discovered that this photo of Berit & I, taken (by Tom X. Chao) in the midst of the tipsy meal where we spontaneously created the character of Althaar, then the setting and almost all of the characters of LIFE WITH ALTHAAR, then the entire overarching plot of the show, all in about 90 minutes, originally posted July 2, 2017, was in fact taken the previous day.

Which means for YEARS I've been celebrating the show's birthday on THE WRONG DAY.

So happy belated birthday to LIFE WITH ALTHAAR, from an embarrassed co-creator.

And best to Aaron Altherr, whose name floated to us from Northern Bell's TV, and who struck out twice, got on base three times, and scored twice for the Mets in their 7-6 win over the Phillies that day. Wherever he is.

There were 10 Collisionworkers at Eli's lovely birthday party at the Parkside on Sunday, but unfortunately only 8 got in the picture. In any case, much catching up and great excitement for future LIFE WITH ALTHAAR plans...

HAPPY ALTHAAR DAY!

So why is it ALTHAAR Day for us?

Well, as you can see in these photos, on this day, July 2...

In 2015, Berit & I were creating an art installation on Governors Island in preparation for our upcoming play, NORD HAUSEN FLY ROBOT. There was an important sonic component to the installation, as with all our theatre work, and it was around then we started seriously considering a continuing audio work, to give the company something to do when not making theatre.

In 2016, we were attending the wedding of Collisionworker Amanda La Pergola, later a writer and "Mrs. Frondrinax" on ALTHAAR, with many friends also later involved in the show.

In 2017, we were having lunch and getting tipsy on Metropolitan Avenue after a matinee of a friend's show, and wound up creating the premise, title, through-line, location, and most of the characters for LIFE WITH ALTHAAR in about 90 minutes of cocktail-driven riffing. The only main character not created that day was Frondrinax, though we had ideas for a "plant" as part of the overall plot, but two weeks later, when telling Amanda we were planning an audio SF sitcom, she immediately asked if she could be "the nosy neighbor" and everything clicked into place.

In 2019, we were at the last session for episodes 1-4 of LIFE WITH ALTHAAR, with Anna ("Stella Reyes") Stefanic introducing her theme song, and recording additional keyboard parts on other songs, just 10 days before the first episode dropped.

Got a Facebook notice that it is National Selfie Day! It encouraged me (Ian) to put up new selfies.

Well, GCW has two people as the "brain trust," so here's Berit last night at our Anniversary Dinner, and the inside of my skull, from about an hour ago!
