Nancy Whiskey Pub sits in that rare category where the neighborhood evolved around it, not the other way around.

Opened in 1967, before Tribeca was even coined, it started as a dockworker bar in a stretch of Lower Manhattan that looked very different than it does today. Inside, it still carries that same character.

You’ll still find the unique shuffleboard table, a jukebox, and those stained glass lamps frozen in time.

Who remembers Volare, the longtime West Village Italian restaurant on West 4th Street, which operated for decades before closing its doors in 2021?

Being a neighborhood staple, Volare was known for its old school Italian American red sauce cooking with hearty portions of classics like pastas, veal, seafood dishes, and steakhouse-style mains.

After its New York City run ended, the restaurant’s legacy didn’t disappear entirely, as the operation later continued outside the city with a relocation to Tannersville, Pennsylvania in the Poconos, where Volare lives on in a new setting.

What old-school NYC restaurant do you still think about?

Nami Nori (pictured above) has a new pop-up running in the West Village called TBD Gimbap, taking over what used to be Postcard Bakery at 31 Carmine Street.

The project comes from chef Jihan Lee and the Launchpad Hospitality team behind Nami Nori, shifting from hand roll temaki to Korean-style gimbap made to order. The menu is focused on grab-and-go rolls like beef bulgogi, spicy pork, tuna mayo, and soy garlic tofu, plus a rotating set of specials and desserts.

The setup is focused on takeaway, but also offers some seating and a standing bar.

News just broke that Mr. Chow in Tribeca is expected to close after roughly two decades on the corner of Hudson and North Moore, with reports that Olio e PiĂą will soon take over the space.

The location first opened in 2006 as the second New York outpost from restaurateur Michael Chow, whose original London restaurant dates back to 1968. Over the years, the restaurant has become known for dishes like chicken satay, Beijing duck, Mr Chow noodles, and their nightly Handmade Noodle Show.

The space also drew crowds from the film, fashion, music, and art world for years. Did you ever get to visit the Tribeca location?

Happy Monday! Who’s in the mood for pizza? In Flatiron, Patsy’s Pizzeria has opened a new downtown location inside Freehand New York!

The space sits inside of the hotel on Lexington Ave, marking a new outpost of the long-running New York pizzeria.

Inside, it’s a sit-down setup with a bar area connected to the hotel lobby space. The menu focuses on Patsy’s famous pies, including whole pizzas and slices depending on service.

The original Patsy’s in East Harlem (pictured above) dates back decades, and this location brings that setup downtown.

Earlier this year, da Toscano relocated from Minetta Lane (pictured above) in the West Village to the historic Iroquois Hotel in Midtown, reopening at 49 W 44th Street in February.

Chef-owner Michael Toscano originally opened the restaurant in 2020 before moving the operation into the hotel space. The move expanded their menu across breakfast, lunch, and dinner service, while keeping dishes like octopus carpaccio, lamb neck agnolotti, and veal chop parm on the menu.

The Midtown location also includes a larger dining room and kitchen, with leather banquettes, wood details, and more seating throughout the restaurant.

Did you ever go to the original spot before the Midtown move?

Bar Ferdinando opened this month on Union Street in Carroll Gardens, taking over the longtime home of the now-closed Ferdinando’s Focacceria (pictured above) after more than a century in the space.

The new all-day cafe and bar comes from restaurateur Sal Lamboglia, who was brought in by former owner Francesco “Frank” Buffa after Ferdinando’s closed last year. Parts of the daytime menu carry over recipes tied to the original restaurant, including pane e panelle made from Buffa’s family recipe, along with Sicilian arancini, octopus salad, and sandwiches served on house-made focaccia.

Parts of the original room were also kept intact, including the old signage, tile flooring, framed photos, and light fixtures from the Ferdinando’s years.

News just broke that Donohue’s Steak House on Lexington Ave is set to close this June after about 75 years on the Upper East Side.

The closure comes as the restaurant winds down a run that started back in 1950, staying in the same family across three generations and operating out of the same location between 63rd and 64th Street the entire time.

Owner Donohue-Peters and her niece opened a second location called Donohue’s East in Westhampton Beach last summer, which marked the family’s first expansion in decades. A third location with another niece is also planned elsewhere on Long Island.

Inside the Lexington Ave flagship, black vinyl booths line the perimeter and a dark wood bar sits just inside the entrance off Lexington. The menu has stayed centered on steaks and chops, with sides like creamed spinach and baked potatoes. Now that it’s finally closing its doors, what dish would you go back to have one last time?

Jing Fong on the Upper West Side has closed last month after about eight years in the neighborhood. This was the smaller outpost of the long-running Chinatown banquet hall that brought dim sum cart service uptown.

Inside, big round tables filled the room, with red accents and carts moving through regularly with items like roast pork buns, har gow, siu mai, and other dim sum plates.

Did you ever make it to this sit-down dim sum spot before it closed?
