The Everyman Company

The Everyman Company The Everyman Company was founded in 1968 by actress Geraldine Fitzgerald and director Jonathan Ringk Let's try and gather any and all alumni towards this page.

Despite the powerful influence the company had in it's hey day (1968-1976 - were those it's peak years?) it now seems all but forgot. Let this be a place to share photos and stories from those years. I think we need to get a bit more history going on here. Summers it was the Everyman Company with winters inside under the auspices of The Chalk Circle Players. If you were a member of the company or can remember seeing one of our shows....then join in!

Unbelievable! So many great (and often pretty funny) memories - Bob Jones and John Farrell meet again after 40 years. How amazing we're both still here and still working the auld sawdust and greasepaint circuit. You can see his fabulous wife Grace (and, seriously Bob, she's a lot more fun than you. Hahahahahaha) AND the two outstanding siblings, Andrew and Madison. Both very fine looking creatures. (I don't think they let you live in LA if you don't pass that test) BUT doesn't Andrew have that same look that his dad had at that age. Right? - (Don't get me wrong, Bob. I know that in the AARP division we're both frontrunners, but right now we are talking the similarities.)

To be honest, when I came down the steps to welcome all you I saw Andrew first and it was just like seeing Bobby the last time I saw him - like 40 years ago.

I love it when that kind of s**t happens.

To compound that effect of memory curving, Fionan brought in a package of really good madeleines from Geneva. It was all very Proustian. Hahahaha.

I have just received word that one of the Company's former members, Rick Shur, passed away today. More details will follow as we get them. In the meantime, please wish his spirit well.

Just wanted to draw people's attention to this excellent indiegogo campaign that my friend, Kendra Augustin, has launched. It reminds me of many of the same ideals we had back in the Everyman Company days. Have a view, listen to their podcast and maybe pitch in a few bucks to help them meet their target! (That's Kendra on the left - she's fantastic and I hope she and her colleagues will succeed!)

TBT: This is from an old microfilm reel BUT it proves that when I (John M Farrell) tell people that the current mega Lincoln Center Summer Festival began more modestly as a showcase for The Everyman Company and its many off-shoots I was not re-writing history!

We were the second show to ever play in The Lepercq at BAM. Right after Christmas, 1973, breaking in the New Year of 1974. We followed Peter Brooks' The Conference of Birds and many of us were lucky to take a workshop with him. How I (John M Farrell) had been transformed by his Midsummer a few years earlier when it played The Billy Rose Theater. (Yes, and it also performed at BAM following that run on Broadway. Saw it there again.) His production was genius and his work had inspired/informed all of us. (The Empty Space was a kind of bible back then.) BUT our production was pretty cool, too. This is where I entered my second apprenticeship under Jonathan and got to meet the second generation of Everyman talent: Bobby, Esther, Leni, Linda, Jerry etc. (so many of us who - thanks to Facebook - are once again in contact!)

These snaps (also from the inexhaustible reserves of Ms. Leni Santoro) are of Elena in the summer of 1974. They're a little blurry (no doubt because the action was so fast-paced!)

The central credo of my entire creative life has been one I know first became real with me back with the Everyman Company.

"The possible must forever be your starting point: from there make impossible things happen."

(That's me quoting myself. I know - boring, right?)

Just wrote a blog entry really pertinent to and about The Everyman Company - which figures under an umbrella of groups sharing the same ethos. Part of my notes on "The Brooklyn Style"

Is there such a thing? “The Brooklyn Style” March 31, 2015Brooklyn, History, [email protected] Notes on Everyman company: ie. Is there such a thing as a Brooklyn Style? Was The Everyman Company half-a-century ago exemplary? Ask me: Q: What is the theater? A: It’s one absurdity piled upon…
