Little Lord

Little Lord "Funny, unsettling, strangely affecting, and always mesmerizing." www.littlelord.org NOW IS THE BEST TIME. NOW IS THE BEST TIME OF YOUR LIFE.

LITTLE LORD is a Brooklyn-based company that develops and produces smart, lively, and unexpected performances. Focusing on offbeat adaptations of classic or neglected texts, Little Lord plunders the theatrical canon in order to forge new plays from old parts. Founded in 2007 by co-artistic directors Michael Levinton and Laura von Holt, Little Lord’s work has been praised as “thought-provoking,” “f

earless in its weirdness,” and “scrappy creative brilliance.” www.littlelord.org

Little Lord has developed and premiered ten original productions at venues throughout New York City, including: NOW IS THE TIME. (Abrons Arts Center, 2016); NYTimes Critic’s Pick BAMBIF*CKER/KAFFEEHAUS (The Brick, Brooklyn, 2015), Pocahontas, and/or AMERICA (Bushwick Starr, Brooklyn, 2013), Babes in Toyland (The Brick, Brooklyn, 2011; OHIO Theatre Ice Factory, NYC, 2009), JEWQUEEN (UNDER St Marks, NYC, 2011), (oh my god I am so) THIRST(y) (Incubator Arts Project, NYC, 2010; Chocolate Factory Theater, Long Island City, 2009), BALABUSTAS, a q***r yiddishkeit Thesmophoriazusae (HERE Arts Center, NYC, 2007), and The Barbesteia: Curse of the House of Malibu (OHIO Theatre, NYC, 2007)

What will we talk about? What will we show? Are we worthy people aside from our accomplishments? STOP, you’re stressing us out!

WHAT IS IT?

LITTLE LORD is a Brooklyn-based company that aggressively reinterprets classic, found, and neglected texts to create new works of experimental performance. Holding a funhouse mirror up to our shared cultural memories, Little Lord subverts conventional storytelling, uproots the familiar, and questions assumptions about the world in which we live. Founded in 2007, Little Lord’s work has been praised as “thought-provoking,” “fearless in its weirdness,” and “scrappy creative brilliance.” www.littlelord.org Originally formed in 2007 under the aegis of Target Margin Theater, Little Lord’s early work included a retelling of Aeschylus’s Oresteia using Barbie dolls in The Barbie-steia: Curse of the House of Malibu (OHIO 2007), a q***r Yiddish vaudeville reinterpretation of Artistophanes’ Thesmophoriazusae in BALABUSTAS (HERE 2007), an adaptation of a Victor Herbert musical extravaganza recast as a “recession spectacular” in BABES IN TOYLAND (The Brick 2011; Ice Factory 2009), a celebration of the biblical Book of Esther styled as your sister’s 1991 Bat Mitzvah in JEWQUEEN (UNDER St Marks 2011) and an experiment with Eugene O’Neill’s early, public domain writing (complete with mad scene and inflatable sharks) in (oh my god I am so) THIRST(y) (Incubator Arts Project 2010; Chocolate Factory 2009).

Most recently, we explored and responded to 400 years of artistic interpretations (whitewashing) of the Pocahontas story in Pocahontas, and/or AMERICA (Bushwick Starr 2013), and delved into the forgotten author behind one of the world’s most beloved children’s books as well as his most scandalous piece of po*******hy for NYTimes Critics’ Pick BAMBIF*CKER/KAFFEEHAUS (Brick 2015). In NOW IS THE TIME. NOW IS THE BEST TIME. NOW IS THE BEST TIME OF YOUR LIFE (Abrons Arts Center 2016) we focused primarily on the artistic output of Washington Irving, but also on larger questions of time, change, and loss.

Currently we are working on The Peanut Butter Show (Target Margin’s Doxsee 2018) and SKINNAMARINK (Next Door @ NYTW 2019).
