A sink mat is one of those details you’ll never notice, but it’s doing important work.
For mounted photographs and other artworks with depth, we often build what’s called a sink mat. By layering museum board around the artwork, we create a recessed space that accommodates its thickness, allowing the window mat to rest on the surrounding support rather than on the artwork itself. The result is a clean presentation that keeps the surface free from unnecessary pressure.
It’s a simple construction detail rooted in conservation framing, protecting the artwork while preserving its integrity for the long term.
