Open to collectors, galleries, and artists, we work with clients to design and build custom frames for an individual piece or an entire exhibition. Since we opened in 1988, we’ve always had two priorities: to deliver the best of conservation framing and to compliment a piece of artwork through simple yet elegant frame design. At DDG Frameshop we use only museum quality materials and methods, specializing in traditional rice paper hinging techniques and working exclusively with 100% cotton rag mat board and UV protected glazings. Whether it’s devolping framing options for your next show, to preserving a family heirloom, DDG delivers the highest quality in preservation framing and design. We all know to look at the front of an artwork. But the back can tell us just as much.

The verso can hold important clues about an artist, an artwork, and the life it has lived: gallery and exhibition labels, inscriptions, stamps, inventory numbers, framing notes, and other marks accumulated over time. Together, these details can become an important record of a work’s history and provenance.

At DDG, we document the verso of every artwork that comes through the shop. Before framing, we scan the back of the work and preserve a copy on the reverse of the finished frame, along with any original gallery, exhibition, or collection labels.

The front may be what we came to see, but the back is part of the artwork’s history, too.

Andy Warhol, Flowers, 1964.

Warhol’s Flowers began with a photograph of hibiscus blossoms by Patricia Caulfield, published in Modern Photographyin 1964. Warhol cropped and flattened the image, heightened its contrast, and transformed it through color and repetition. This offset lithograph was published by Leo Castelli Gallery to coincide with Warhol’s Flower Paintings exhibition that same year.

Framed at DDG in welded aluminum with a polished face, based on the classic Kulicke profile. Developed by artist and frame maker Robert Kulicke in collaboration with MoMA in the 1950s, the thin welded aluminum frame became closely associated with the presentation of postwar American art.

For Warhol, it feels particularly at home: a distinctly midcentury New York frame surrounding an image that helped define Pop Art in New York less than a decade later.

A sink mat is one of those details you’ll never notice, but it’s doing important work.

For mounted photographs and other artworks with depth, we often build what’s called a sink mat. By layering museum board around the artwork, we create a recessed space that accommodates its thickness, allowing the window mat to rest on the surrounding support rather than on the artwork itself. The result is a clean presentation that keeps the surface free from unnecessary pressure.

It’s a simple construction detail rooted in conservation framing, protecting the artwork while preserving its integrity for the long term.

Created in the 1940s, this photograph belongs to the body of work that established Carlotta Corpron as one of America’s pioneering abstract photographers. Influenced by Bauhaus ideas through artist and educator György Kepes and the New Bauhaus movement in Chicago, she transformed light, reflection, and geometry into striking abstract compositions that continue to feel remarkably contemporary.

This fall, the Hirshhorn Museum will present Carlotta Corpron: Light Is a Plastic Medium, the first major museum survey dedicated to her work.

A quiet all white frame and generous mat create the space the photograph deserves, allowing its extraordinary use of light to remain the focus.

A piece in the studio recently by Violet Dennison. Seen here in a powder coated white welded aluminum frame.

Violet Dennison’s paintings move fast, embracing fragmentation, speed, and the visual language of the screen. Working through an iterative process that spans digital and physical space, her compositions often feel interrupted, layered, and in flux.

Dennison (b. 1989) has exhibited widely, with recent solo shows at Tara Downs, Theta, and Jan Kaps, and group exhibitions including the New Museum Triennial and presentations with Bortolami.
