Perhaps Marvin’s only weakness as an employee is that he has to sit on a colleague’s lap to reach the computer.

Problematic? Sound off in the comments.

At Patten Studio we never make mistakes; we merely engage in fruitful “exploration” of tactics that did not work.

Our team installed Flagscape on-site in Midtown Manhattan last spring across the street from the flowers blooming in Bryant Park. 🌷

From laying the sculpture’s foundation (which had to be perfect before it was covered in concrete!) to running power and data, to assembling and commissioning the sculpture on site. . . . we’re not afraid to get our jumpsuits dirty! (Maybe that’s why they’re gray.)

We work efficiently on site, but not quite *this* efficiently. (Do you like our jumpsuits?)

Concept, prototyping, design development, mechanical engineering, electronics, software, production, architectural integration, commissioning for Flagscape by Patten Studio.

We’re thrilled to announce that following a unanimous vote Design Engineer MARVIN BEAR has been declared Patten Studio’s Employee of the Year 2025. Since joining our team, Marvin has demonstrated remarkable adaptability both as a designer and a fabricator, and has increasingly taken on a client facing role.

Photo 1: Design Engineer Marvin Bear in the shop. “I’ve told him not to wear the bow in the shop.” - Design Engineer

Photo 2: Marvin operating the Speedio S700Xd1. “I was really surprised by all of Marvin’s hard skills considering he is such a soft bear.” - Director of Strategy

Photo 3: Marvin soldering a Patten Studio Exponent Motor Controller board. “I wouldn’t say Marvin is the fastest member of our team, because he doesn’t have any fingers, but he gets the job done right.” - Creative Director .dthx

Photo 4: Marvin checking that his QFNs have no bridging under the microscope. “Marvin’s attention to detail is really unparalleled, but he needs to be helped up to the microscope.” - Principal, James P.

As a freestanding structure, Yellow Brick Wall is engineered to support its full weight of 4,000lb. A steel frame is clad with two layers of fire rated plywood, to which the 85 LED mini displays, 1 touchscreen, and 299 brick modules are attached. Brick modules are bolted on to the front and left faces of the wall, and slid on using z-clips on the right face of the wall to account for a structural beam behind the artwork. Leveling feet attached to the steel support structure allow the frame to be raised up into the ceiling soffit to create the impression that the artwork stretches up indefinitely.

Yellow Brick Wall’s 85 mini displays are a custom RaspberryPi LED assembly encased in a ventilated 3D printed enclosure. Patten Studio firmware written in C++ allows the mini displays to communicate with SOSO’s graphics software, which controls the wall’s content.

Swipe for a look at the underlying structure that supports All Points Canada . . .

The artwork’s electronics are installed directly onto a fire rated plywood support structure above the finished ceiling and are contained within 3D printed enclosures that can be easily serviced or replaced from below.

Alignment arms lock the plywood panels to their corresponding ceiling tiles, without placing any weight on the delicate ceiling system. The weight of the panels is supported by a unistrut matrix, ensuring that the artwork can be spaced and leveled regardless of variations in the ceiling slab.

Each canoe pendant in All Points Canada is controlled by a Patten Studio Exponent Motor Controller above the finished ceiling.
