Join us TODAY, September 12th, to help bring Newburgh’s local tool shed one BIG step closer to completion!

10am–3pm: Community Build Day #3
Participate in on-site activities and witness the exciting “roof-raising” moment! Sign up through the link in Newburgh TOOLS bio.

6pm–9pm: Fundraiser Party
The site opens to the public for music, refreshments, and some bio-based activities. The more the merrier—bring your friends!

Newburgh Tools is a community-based nonprofit working to provide our city’s residents with equitable, low-cost access to tools and practical resources.

They’re building a tool lending facility, shared garden, and community resource hub on a vacant lot on Chambers Street, offering tools and educational programs to anyone who lives in Newburgh.

Come out and help support a great community resource!

The degradation was severe.

I fell in love with the Liberty Street School the moment I stepped inside.
I found the interior endlessly interesting—beautiful texturally, artistically, even spiritually.
The interior was extraordinary. I spent months simply being there. Meditating in it. Photographing every corner of it. One Liberty quickly became my favorite place.

Within its walls, I could find quiet from the noise of the outside world. Inside this battered, abused, and neglected old school, I could think. I could hear myself.

I was so enamored that I completely overlooked how extensive the damage really was. To me, it became my new church. To me the Liberty St. School was Beautiful.
I identified with its injuries. I understood its gaps. I felt its endurance and its strength.
I had a powerful desire to care for this building.

The energy inside was strong. More importantly, it was positive energy. This was a happy place. This was a safe place. This was a productive place.

For generations, children had come here to learn, to grow, to imagine their futures. That feeling remained embedded in the walls, lingering long after the classrooms had fallen silent in 1983.

I felt compelled to save it. I felt compelled to reactivate it.

41 Days.

20230326 last Thursday we had another very special guest for our community leaders conversation at Canterbury Brook Academy of The Arts. One of my mentors here in the Hudson Valley Kevin O’Connor. Kevin is the chief executive officer of RUPCO based out of Kingston, New York and has been there since 2002. A graduate of Marist University Kevin has dedicated his professional life to creating affordable and transformative housing. RUPCO has created multigenerational, artist, affordable and homeless housing. They also create opportunities for homeowners to buy their homes. Here in Newburgh, Kevin and his team rolled up their sleeves to preserve multiple buildings and commercial facilities. Notably, the beautiful refurbished church known as High Point, which now provides services, community center, Art galleries and performance spaces. highpointnewburgh

Sending a warm heartfelt, thank you to Kevin and his team at RUPCO for helping to save our beautiful historic fabric and putting back into use buildings we would’ve otherwise had lost forever.

Thank you, Kevin for visiting our super curious kids at CBA. They totally got what you do and I hope many of them will follow in your footsteps!

Last Friday at Canterbury Brook Academy of The Arts we had a special guest visitor for our Community Leaders Assembly.

Born and raised in Newburgh Genie served as Council Woman for Ward 2, She is a published writer and mother of 3 grown children (all teachers). Big Thank You to Kit More from The MidHudson Times for this great article about one of my favorite places on this planet. CBA is an independent Art School in the City of Newburgh. Our students are thriving creatively and academically. As the Board President of this magical place I can say with confidence we can’t do this alone.

It takes a village to raise a child. Please reach out to me if you are interested in helping us provide the best possible education for K-12 kids in the City of Newburgh and the Hudson Valley.
