Nora's Playhouse

Nora's Playhouse women theatre artists collaborating to tell women's stories

Named for the heroine of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, Nora’s Playhouse is 501(c)3 women’s theatre collective with an all volunteer staff. While our base of operations is in Brooklyn, New York, our members live not only in the five boroughs, but in Montgomery, Alabama. We are devoted to developing and producing women-centered stories, while increasing professional opportunities for our fellow women theatre artists both on and off-stage.

"...the low representational numbers for women are difficult to square. By various measures (including the numbers of women graduating from degree programs in the arts), roughly two-thirds of the field’s writers are women—there is not, as artistic directors once argued, a pipeline issue. It seemed particularly bitter that, even as theatres made passionate arguments for diversity and new artistic directors took over from the old guard, certain habits were creeping back."

After years of progress in diversity, many companies’ upcoming slates feature mostly, and in some cases entirely, male-writer lineups. The backslide has prompted an outcry.

Congratulations to Martha Pichey on the Off-Broadway premiere of her play ASHES & INK being presented by Paper Birch Productions at AMT Theater October 16-November 3, 2024. All of us at Nora’s Playhouse are so excited that New York audiences are getting chance to see this play!

The Nora’s Playhouse team first met Martha in April 2016 after reading her play submission, Ashes & Ink. Following some dramaturgy, discussions, and a developmental table read, we presented our first staged reading of the piece at the Episcopal Actors’ Guild in NYC in May 2017. A second staged reading followed at the debut of Nora’s Salon South at Mission House in Montgomery, Alabama in October 2018. We were enjoying working with Martha on the play’s continued development with an eye toward a full production in Alabama in 2020 when our plans–everyone’s plans–were interrupted by the pandemic. In September-October 2022, we were thrilled to finally bring Ashes & Ink to the stage in its world premiere production at The Sanctuary in Montgomery, Alabama.

“Satan, you toothless old pimp, you can retire.”

How does Jacqueline Allen Trimble write like that? On August 21, you can ask her yourself.

Join our poetry editor Andy Fogle and editor-in-chief Chuck Reece for an intimate session with Dr. Jacqueline Allen Trimble, who writes some of the most powerful and confrontational poetry coming from the South. Writing Your South is a quarterly series of online events where Salvation South invites acclaimed Southern authors to share how they write the South as they see it—for a limited audience. Jackie will open with a talk about her approach to confronting the South’s historical demons, then we’ll open the conversation. Only 25 tickets are available for this exclusive online event, and they’re going fast.
