Are ya'll ready for a day of beauty rooted in West African traditions?

Africa day 2026 may be over, but we celebrate Africa every day! Join us for Beauty Café's Gele workshop, this Sunday from 2-6pm.

In partnership with Den Muso, we will uplift the matriarchs through traditional adornment, nostalgic sounds, and the warm aromas of the continent. Experience a live Nigerian gele-tying demo, get adorned with henna, and capture the moment with a professional photographer. (Custom gele tying is also available with an expert artist for a fee.)

Though we're not back in the garden today for our annual high-energy dance party, we are indoors in the cafe!.

Algo.Riddim soundsystem, led by DJ’s Epic B (), Uproot Andy (), and special guest Run P. (), will be playing West Indian, African, and Afro-latin sounds.

To celebrate, we're joining her as she moderates a meaningful conversation with the Director of Cultural Affairs for the San Francisco Arts Commission, Ralph Re*****on (), about his new book, Penetrating Whiteness.

At a time when America faces escalating racial tensions, the re-emergence of white nationalist movements, and growing threats to democracy, Ralph Re*****on's Penetrating Whiteness is an urgently needed clarion call. His essays, which are a powerful and timely collection of piercing insights into the realities of racism, sexism, and homophobia in our country, boldly confront the uncomfortable truths about the persisting toxicity of white supremacy and systemic discrimination.

The Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965 has massive implications on Black and Brown voters. Expect provisions to roll back your rights instead of protecting them. Expect more gerrymandering ie. political manipulation of district boundaries (maps) to further disenfranchise our communities from the political process and from meaningful representation, from voting to securing necessary seats in government (local, state and federal) to effect change. Simply said, it's a betrayal of the Civil Rights movement, undoing decades of progress.

Don't get it twisted. Your voice still matters. Although this is a federal decision, call, email your local reps. Now more than ever, we need to focus on litigation, state level action and community organizing.

Don't let up. Never forget.

🍃Just in time for Earth month, join us Tuesday, April 21, for a free community film screening of the highly-acclaimed documentary SEEDS, a portrait of centennial farmers in the geographical south, directed by Brittany Shyne. Using lyrical black and white imagery, this meditative film examines the decline of generational black farmers and the significance of owning land.

Before this special screening, MoCADA will also preview an excerpt from Copper Boyz, Collin Riggins' riveting full-length documentary about a group of cowboys who ride around Kansas City, engaging with community members and introducing youth to horsemanship. Guided by an ethos of violence prevention, they fundamentally reimagine what it means to be a cowboy and steward and, in turn, invite us to do the same.

The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion on the generative practices of land ownership, stewardship, and cultivation, and more . Panelists include Sabrina Schmidt Gordon (Producer, SEEDS) and Collin Riggins (Director, Copper Boyz) in conversation with DeVonne Jackson Perez.

** Bonus: Event attendees will receive complementary bags of fresh food from our partners, Brooklyn Supported Agriculture (), a Black-led Worker-Owned. Farmer-Focused community supported agriculture collective. Food bags will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last.

📣📣 Celebrate Women's History month with us... Join us tonight, Friday, March 27 for an inspiring artist talk with Chicago-bred artist Shani Crowe.

In conversation with MoCADA Executive Director + Chief Curator Amy Andrieux, () the pair will explore the themes found within Shani’s solo exhibition, “Red, Black, and Green,” from the collective power of Pan Africanism and the pillars of culture & history that inspire her, to what womanhood means to her now and why liberation must be inclusive. No stone will be left untuned.

The conversation, which will begin at 7:30pm will span 45 minutes, followed by a 15 minute audience Q&A. Light refreshments will be served.
