Founded in 1897, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (BKCM) has been serving the New York musical community for over a century. Through our Community Music School division, we offer private and group instruction in every major instrument as well as an early childhood music program for parents and children. Our Suzuki division

offers instruction in violin, viola, cello, guitar, piano, and bass using the Suzuki method, which is recognized worldwide as a highly effective approach for teaching children the language of music. The Music Partners and Music Therapy divisions bring music education programs and music therapy to schools, youth, senior and adult-support service centers, foster care agencies, and other community-based organizations. Throughout the year, BKCM presents concerts and community-wide events, including performances by its Community Orchestra and Chorale.

For the sixth year running, BKCM’s Midsummer Nights series is bringing four evenings of FREE music to BKCM’s front stoop in July and August. Curated by NPR Tiny Desk artist and former BKCM Jazz Leadership Fellow Mélanie Jean Baptiste Charles 🌺, this year’s lineup is a who’s-who of artists who are transcending genres and revitalizing jazz.

Many of this year’s Midsummer artists are drawing from their Haitian roots or influences and combining traditional music of the past with that of the present moment. Melanie Charles’ lineup serves as a celebration of Haiti and its immeasurable resilience — and a reminder of how the arts lead us through.

BKCM is proud to join community partners and neighbors for “I Am Somebody” – a radiant afternoon of performances and activities in Brower Park from 11 AM–3 PM.

BKCM’s Jazz Lab Summer Intensive for Adults is open for registration! This invigorating summer session is open to string, woodwind, brass, piano and drum/percussion players, and vocalists who are looking to expand their jazz knowledge and overall musical skills, or who are hoping to find a welcoming entry point to jazz music. Taught by Brooklyn-based jazz legends and multi-instrumental performing artists .apfelbaum and , students will grow their understanding of jazz practice and performance in a warm, collaborative and non-competitive learning environment. The weeklong intensive culminates in a public performance at the BKCM Concert Hall!

In case you haven’t heard, BKCM is gaining an additional home around the corner at One Prospect Park West! Scroll through to see what this means for our programs next semester.

This expansion is about more than square feet. Our new space will unlock funding to address system inequities in music education and music therapy across New York City. Today, more than 60 public elementary and middle schools in Brooklyn still have no school-based music education or music therapy. By expanding our programs here in Park Slope, we’ll be able to reach thousands more students and help close that gap for good 🎵🌱
