If there is one lesson I learned in the 13 years of attending Burning Man, it is that you can plan, produce, prepare, and coordinate all you want, but that doesn’t mean that the thing you intend to do, will actually happen. And then when it doesn’t, something else will happen instead, and the challenge is to embrace this alternative scenario rather than to loathe it.
On Saturday, right here in Brooklyn, that lesson was put to the test, when weeks of rehearsals, logistics, investments, and sweat were mercilessly nullified by the weather Gods. Until 5pm, all weather radars predicted NO RAIN in our area (there was plenty of rain all around us), so Jon, Jordan and I were stoked to premiere our five pieces to the outdoor crowd at 6:30pm. But right after our introduction piece, a giant cloud formed directly over our head, and it started pouring down. Since only the DJ booth was covered, we had to tarp the rest of the stage and instruments and hope that the rain would quickly stop so that we could continue, but then the radar showed that it was only going to get worse.
I very much regret that we did not get to perform the entirety of our live set this weekend, and I hope you enjoyed the improvised alternative set of eclectic happy tunes for a soaked summer rain dance. Stay tuned for a make-up date for this great live project, and I hope to see you this Saturday at the Onyx Room for an all-night MBTS session. https://shotgun.live/events/the-scumfrog-most-below-the-surface
