55 9th Street in the Gowanus Industrial Arts Complex operated as a steel mill in the nineteenth century. A massive structure featuring civil war-era industrial architectural construction, the building has found new life in a thriving artistic community. As Gowanus Ballroom, it hosts art exhibitions, musical performances, and other cultural events that showcase the talents of emerging artists and designers in the Brooklyn area. The building also serves as the home of Serett, a custom metal fabrication shop that frequently opens its doors to artists and architects, assisting and teaching them.
