BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange

BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange BAX has a proud history and commitment to developing artist cohorts that are reflective of our mission and core commitments.
(1)

BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange, founded in 1991, is a multigenerational arts organization nurturing creative expression and artistic process through education, residencies, and performance at the intersection of arts and social justice. BAX provides a nurturing, year-round, performance, rehearsal and educational venue in Brooklyn that encourages artistic risk-taking and stimulates dialogue among diver

se constituencies. In our curation and residencies, we take into account our field’s history of racism and discrimination, and take active steps to undo the effects of that history. We believe that this commitment enriches the AIR experience for all members and audiences.

BAX has been honored to host Art by Construction Workers (ABCW) for over two decades. These artists have played a meaningful role in BAX’s 35-year history; many are parents of BAX alumni and longtime members of our community, and some even helped physically build BAX’s Park Slope home when it moved here in 1998.

The exhibition began with a simple yet powerful idea: that those who build our physical spaces are often creative makers themselves.

The first show featured art hung from ladders and jackhammers, with hard hats repurposed as sculptural objects, bringing tools of the trade into conversation with the tools of artistic expression. This blending of labor and artistry continues to shape ABCW’s ethos.

While BAX does not curate the annual ABCW exhibition, we proudly support these makers and their collaborative spirit. The project exemplifies BAX’s core values: community, creativity, collaboration, and experimentation. It is a celebration not only of visual art but of the hands and lives that have quite literally shaped our space.

“Can we please come back tomorrow?” one student asked on the final day of BAX’s Spring Break Arts Program—and they weren't alone!

After a week of theatre-making, dancing, tumbling, visual art, and fast friend-making, each day brought something new and joyful. Mornings were for performing arts, afternoons for art-making and storytelling, with sunny lunch breaks and games at Washington Park in between.

The week ended with students proudly wearing their handmade, sparkling crowns—and plenty of excitement to keep creating at home. We hope to see many of you back at BAX this summer!"

✨ For over 25 years, Brooklyn Arts Exchange’s annual Teen Artist Exchange (formerly Teen Arts Conference) has invited teen performing arts companies and individual artists (ages 13-18) across New York City to come together as part of a wider cultural community of learners and practitioners.

The 2026 Teen Artist Exchange was a vibrant, joy-filled gathering that brought together young artists from across the city for an evening of creativity, collaboration, and inspiration.

Youth representatives from Irondale Ensemble Project, Dancewave, The People's Theatre, Hause of Hawk, Center for Family Life (Sunset Park), and BAX came together to watch and share works in progress and generate new ideas for each other's pieces. Performance educators led workshops that included:

✨ Absurdist Clown
✨ Salsa Dancing
✨ Dance Freedom

This free event for invited teen participants offers a dynamic range of theater, dance, drag, and interdisciplinary performance workshops, along with opportunities for sharing original performance work, peer mentorship, resource exchange, and creative professional development.

The reflections of the young people captured the spirit of the evening,

"Watching performances inspired what I might make in the future."

"I'm in awe of the creativity and collaboration...there is so much diversity and talent!"

Moments of connection emerged through both performance and conversation, reminding everyone present why spaces like this matter. As one young artist put it,

"Art is a beautiful way to remind ourselves all the ways we can create."

And perhaps most powerfully,

"Art gives me hope and it makes me feel powerful!"

The event was a celebration of young voices and artistry that we won't soon forget!
