This class focuses on developing drag characters that expand what it means to be a drag queen, king, thing, in between or beyond what we’ve seen. ⁠

Through group games, writing prompts and discussion, solo and collaborative movement exercises, we give ourselves permission to express the full range of who we are and can be while releasing narratives about how we “should” move, express, or dress based on gender norms we’ve inherited. ⁠

Established in 1993, the AIR (Artist in Residence) program has supported over 70 dance, theater, and multidisciplinary performance artists across three decades. The program is designed as a process-oriented incubator, supporting artists who share BAX’s commitment to racial and cultural justice.
⁠
🟪 j. bouey (they/them) is a Brooklyn-based Afrofuturistic multimedia dance artist, writer, ethnochoreologist, and community organizer from Los Angeles, by way of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, documenting oppression resilient dance cultures through choreography and mythopoeia.

bouey is a Bessie awardee (2023), founder and host of The Dance Union Podcast, member of the Science of Art, Music, and Brain Activity (S.A.M.B.A.) cohort at Arizona State University.

🟪 Kayla Farrish (she/her) is a Black American Director merging dance-theater, filmmaking, narrative, and sound score. She captures ranging identity, the mythical dualities of history and present survival, and powerful dreaming lending to liberation.

Her commissions include Limon Dance Company, Whim’ Whim, Ririe Woodbury, Louis Armstrong House Museum, Danspace, Little Island, Harlem Stage and beyond.

🟪 Christopher “Unpezverde” Núñez (he/him) is a Costa Rican/American choreographer and performance artist known for his sensory-based movement and innovative audio description. His work explores themes of disability, immigration, and indigeneity.

In 2023, Art in America named him one of 20 "New Talent," and he received a Bessie Award nomination for "Outstanding Performer." Recent projects include Electric Fish: Bring my Dead Body to the Surface (Lincoln Center), The Circle or Prophetic Dream (Danspace Project), and A Garden in the Shape of Dreams (The Kitchen).

As we reflect on nearly 35 years of BAX, we’ve been thinking about what it takes to sustain artists over time. How does an artist become an artist? It doesn’t happen through a single residency, or a performance, or a youth class, but through years of practice and mentorship.

BAX nurtures the art of becoming. We do it in classrooms where young people are moving freely, in workshops where emerging artists are developing new work, and in relationships that are sustained over years. This kind of support is not visible in a single moment. It accumulates over the years, through care, and through people who choose to stay in it. Many of you have been part of that continuity! Thank you for the ways you’ve shown up for BAX, by giving, by staying connected, and by believing in artists and the time their work requires.

Earlier this year, we updated our mission, vision, and values, and invited our community to reflect on those commitments with us. What we heard through that survey was a clear reaffirmation that BAX is not only a place to make work, but also a place to belong.

Your support helps sustain the space, time, mentorship, and community that artists of all ages need to thrive and feel a sense of belonging throughout their lives.

As we look ahead to next season—entering our 35th year—we’ll be gathering across generations to reconnect, reflect, and celebrate the people and legacies that have shaped, and continue to shape, BAX.

BAX has been honored to host Art by Construction Workers (ABCW) for over two decades. These artists have played a meaningful role in BAX’s 35-year history; many are parents of BAX alumni and longtime members of our community, and some even helped physically build BAX’s Park Slope home when it moved here in 1998.

The exhibition began with a simple yet powerful idea: that those who build our physical spaces are often creative makers themselves.

The first show featured art hung from ladders and jackhammers, with hard hats repurposed as sculptural objects, bringing tools of the trade into conversation with the tools of artistic expression. This blending of labor and artistry continues to shape ABCW’s ethos.

While BAX does not curate the annual ABCW exhibition, we proudly support these makers and their collaborative spirit. The project exemplifies BAX’s core values: community, creativity, collaboration, and experimentation. It is a celebration not only of visual art but of the hands and lives that have quite literally shaped our space.
