BAX has a proud history and commitment to developing artist cohorts that are reflective of our mission and core commitments.

BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange, founded in 1991, is a multigenerational arts organization nurturing creative expression and artistic process through education, residencies, and performance at the intersection of arts and social justice. BAX provides a nurturing, year-round, performance, rehearsal and educational venue in Brooklyn that encourages artistic risk-taking and stimulates dialogue among diverse constituencies. In our curation and residencies, we take into account our field’s history of racism and discrimination, and take active steps to undo the effects of that history. We believe that this commitment enriches the AIR experience for all members and audiences.

During National Arts Education Week, the BAX Education Team was busy kicking off our 35th Anniversary Season!⁠
⁠
We welcomed new and returning BAX teachers and families into the BAX Building for our annual Fall Open House, celebrating BAX’s milestone birthday with movement activities, student performances, community tributes, and free sample classes.⁠
⁠
Behind the scenes, we also gathered with our artist educators for fruitful planning meetings to review BAX’s teaching and learning core values, program continuum, and goals for the year.⁠

BAX Co-Executive Director of Education Lucia Scheckner also had the pleasure of connecting with the broader NYC arts education community during a special advocacy conversation featuring New York City Department of Cultural Affairs(DCLA)
Commissioner Diya Vij hosted by the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable.

And looking ahead, we’re excited to reconnect with the NYC Arts Education & CYD Coalition for our second gathering, hosted by The People’s Theatre in their brand-new home! BAX loves collaborating with the greater Arts Education community of NYC! ⁠

Meet Fall 2026 Space Grant Resident Artist Miguel Alicia Grullón!⁠
⁠
🔷 Alicia Grullón (she/her) is a US-born Dominican conceptual artist, whose work critiques the politics of presence in political, environmental, and social spheres through image-making, performance, and social practice. At the core of her practice is a focus on mapping and exploring the metaphorical and emblematic connections between place and our bodies.

She has exhibited and performed nationally and abroad and is a recipient of numerous awards including Creative Time’s Research and Development Fellowship, Franklin Furnace Archives, The Mellon Initiative Community Fellowship at the New School and the Colene Brown Art Prize, among others. Alicia was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in fine arts from Moore College of Art and Design in 2021.

She has contributed to Routledge publications on social practice and feminism as well as essays on Verso Books blog, the LatinX Project and Hyperallergic. She is based in the Bronx where she grew up.

Meet Fall 2026 Space Grant Resident Artist Miguel Alejandro Castillo Le Maitre!⁠
⁠
🔷 Miguel Alejandro Castillo Le Maitre (he/him) is a q***r, transmodern interdisciplinary artist from Caracas, Venezuela. Named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2024, he is a Bessie Award–nominated dancer and the 2025–2026 Opera Directing Fellow at the Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts at The Juilliard School.

Working across choreography, direction, installation, education, and performance, Castillo creates socially engaged projects that explore diasporic imagination and future folklore. A deep belief in—and insistence on—the possibility of a brighter present drives his creative work.

He has performed in the U.S. and internationally in works by Faye Driscoll, Jeanine Durning, Lena Engelstein, Laurel Jenkins, Daniella Barbarito, and many other brilliant women. Recent choreographic credits include David Lang’s prisoner of the state, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, the Barbican Centre, and Malmö Opera, and John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary at the Volksoper in Vienna.

He is a cooperating partner of the Pina Bausch Fellowship, collaborating with his 93-year-old grandmother. Residencies and fellowships include danceWEB at ImPulsTanz Festival (2021) and Fresh Tracks at New York Live Arts (2022–23). Castillo holds a BA in Dance and Theatre from Middlebury College and an MFA in Choreography and Performance from Smith College.

Meet Fall 2026 Space Grant Resident Artist Anooj Bhandari!⁠
⁠
🔷 Anooj Bhandari (he/him) is an artist who attempts to build real-life moments that feel like witnessing animation. Drawn to aesthetics that sit somewhere between a Shel Silverstein drawing and an episode of the Twilight Zone, he is particularly intrigued by the ways the endearing softness of illustration and the eerie mysticism of the unknown can weave together to ignite communal daydreaming (if we can be curious here and now, what else can we think about with possibility, together?).

Specializing experimental non-fiction and magical realism for the page, stage, and screen, he is interested in bringing to life and visibility the multiple social histories that sit behind every interaction, and how we can uplift the deepening of relationships with our ecosystems as the play-space for a free future. He believes in the relationship between artist and audience to be one of poetry// The artist again and again releasing perfection in the name of iterations, and the audience growing their own autonomy by allowing their imagination to fill the gaps between each try.

Anooj loves the idea of Ras, juice, or divine essence, within the classical Indian arts as the goal for the relationship between artist and audience. He equally loves the task of testing the hypothesis that the punk, the q***r, and the experimental are divine forces in themselves.

With special attention to divinity’s first rule, to not ask question that one already knows the answer to, Anooj’s work as an artist also embeds itself into his community organizing work, creating micro-communities where people can feel the changing weight of the world’s many, grief-filled questions, when asked in company; microcosms where when folks depart, the question of who was artist and who was audience hopefully feels like the least significant question, altogether.

Meet Fall 2026 Space Grant Resident Artist Kat Sotelo!

🔷 Kat Sotelo (she/they) is a first-generation Filipinx American performance artist, choreographer, and set designer whose work blends movement, satire, and constructed environments. Drawing from her experience in exotic dance, she explores the body as a site of commerce – examining fantasy, servitude, and the labor of spectacle.

Trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art (BFA, Interdisciplinary Sculpture and Video/Film) and with a background in the film industry, she moves fluidly between video, fabrication, and live performance, using cinematic language to construct layered realities.

Sotelo’s work has been supported by Abrons Art Center, Movement Research, CPR – Center for Performance Research, New Dance Alliance, GALLIM Dance Company, Theater Mitu, The Brick Theater, and MOtiVE. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Applications for the Fall 2026 Drag Performance Class due Monday, August 31 @ 11:59 PM EST

Drag Performance: Between & Beyond Gender is an in-person 10-12 week class which culminates in a performance showcase featuring original performance pieces by emerging experimental drag artists who subvert both gender and genre.

This class experiments with the tools of pantomime, clowning, lip sync, caricature, structured improv and intuitive movement to build towards in-process drag performance acts.
