You've been asking when Atlantique was getting an update. Here's your answer: I shot it twice this year, once over the Fourth and again on Labor Day, and the new work just went up. If you were on that beach either weekend, there's a decent chance you're standing in one of these frames somewhere.

This is one of my favorites from the whole summer. You've got the boat basin sitting there, the Shack holding court like it always does, and one long clean wave rolling the length of the beach like it's got somewhere to be.

Atlantique doesn't get talked about the way some of the other villages do, and that's kind of the point. It sits on the narrowest stretch of the whole island, maybe fifty homes total, and the marina is really the reason the place exists at all. No boardwalks, no real stores, just a sand path everybody calls Burma Road and the Shack as the one stop for a drink or a sandwich or whatever you forgot to pack. It's a boater's town before it's anything else, and it wears that just fine.

Went up over Fair Harbor, Lonelyville, and Dunewood on the Fourth and got angles nobody on that beach has ever seen.

Fair Harbor's been standing since the 1880s, started life as a fishing hamlet, still throws that Pine Walk arts fair every summer going back to '72.

Lonelyville's my favorite story on the island. Three guys named it over dinner and ch*****ne in 1908 and just ran with it.

Dunewood used to be a sand dump. Two guys turned it into the quietest, greenest village on Fire Island back in '58.

If you were on that beach for the holiday, here's your gut check from a couple hundred feet up. No judgment, everybody's just a grain of sand from here.

The Cherry Grove Invasion, shot from the air.

Every Fourth of July weekend the Cherry Grove ferry pulls in loaded with drag queens in full regalia, and the Pines empties out to meet them on the dock. It's been happening since the sixties, back when Cherry Grove was one of the only places on the East Coast where gay men and women could just exist without asking permission. What started as a joke between two rival towns turned into one of the great annual rituals of American q***r life.

I was up in the helicopter for this one, no drone, just me and the pilot getting low over the water as the boat came in. From that height you can see the whole thing unfold at once, the gowns, the wig, the crowd waiting, the ferry cutting through the flat gray water like it knows exactly what it's carrying.

May this Fourth be the best one yet.

To everyone who's got one of my prints hanging on a wall somewhere, and to everyone who just stops to look, comment, whatever, it means more than I can really put into words. This whole thing started as me flying over a coastline I love, and somehow turned into all of you. I don't take that lightly.

I'll be out there this weekend, on the beach most likely. Or up in the air. Keep an eye on the sky, you never know.

Spend a lot of summer out on Fire Island. Thirty five miles from the city, no cars, basically a sandbar in the ocean, and when the weather cooperates the surf is actually good. I was scrolling Instagram one night and landed on the page of a local kid shaping boards under his parents' house, a mile from where I was sitting. Couldn't believe it. Texted him, asked if I could come watch him work. Calvin Hill is his name.

Turned out I knew his mom. Worked with her years ago when I was assisting Patrick Demarchelier, she was a studio manager back then. Small world, smaller island.

He was wrapping up a batch of boards for the season so I got a few shots, but what I really want is him mid shape, hands in it, dust everywhere. Going back this summer to get that. Sat on these photos for a while trying to wait for the right moment, then figured why bother, they're good as they are.

Kid's self taught. Still in high school. Builds boards under a house on stilts. Go check him out, and buy a board or a T-Shirt or give him a follow Calvin

Kismet earned its name honestly. It means fate, destiny, the thing that was always going to happen. This little stretch of Fire Island showed up on maps in the early 1900s as one of the first communities to take root along the barrier beach, a place where people came because something pulled them there.

This photograph was taken from a helicopter, low and slow over the water, the way you actually see a place when you stop standing in it. Four sizes, three frame options. Ships to your home or straight to the Fire Island freight ferry. Printing, framing, delivery, all of it included.

This is one of my favorite frames in the entire Fire Island from Above collection, shot from a helicopter on a day when the whole human race decided to show up at once. There is so much happening in this single image that you could pull twenty different photographs out of it and not one of them would be boring. A beach full of ambition.People scattered across the sand with nowhere to be.
That is Fire Island in one frame. Some parts of it ask nothing of you, just silence and marsh grass and the sound of the water. And then there is Robert Moses, which asks everything, all at once, without apology.
Robert Moses State Park sits at the western end of Fire Island, the only stretch of this barrier island you can reach by car. Named for the man who built everything and answered to no one, it opened in 1908 and was remade in the 1950s into the front door of a place that never quite wanted one.
