Our Story
WHO WE ARE Founded by curvy artists Marlee Dater and Lauren Baez, Curvy Artists Collective (CAC for short) is a collective for women/non-binary/femme curvy artists in the entertainment industry. Curvy actors, singers, dancers, comedians, models, et cetera: WE WELCOME YOU! Body Positivity has come a long way in our current day and age with increased inclusivity with events such as Curvy Con, plus size models being included in NY Fashion Week and major fashion campaigns, more fashion brands making clothes in a wider range of sizes, et cetera. However, we feel here at CAC that there is still a major lack of body inclusivity in the entertainment industry, and while progress is being made it is moving far slower than we would like.
HOW IT BEGAN Marlee and Lauren first met at a commercial audition for a character with (surprise!) "Curvy" in the description, and subsequently met at the callback for the same role. Aside from a quick, "I love your hair!" from Lauren, they had no opportunity to connect outside of the audition room. Which was a shame because they both immediately felt drawn to their curvy cohort, even though they were "competing" for the same role! But curves have a way of bringing people together... A couple of weeks later, Lauren left Curvy Con 2019 feeling super inspired so she went to Instagram to follow more curvy influencers, and as luck would have it she came across Marlee's profile! A couple of DMs later an immediate connection and mutual appreciation had begun and the idea for Curvy Artists Collective began.
OUR MISSION We aim to provide a judgment free zone for Curvy Artists to share and support each other around their specific challenges (and successes!) in navigating the entertainment industry as a Curvy Artist. AND to brainstorm ways we can create more opportunities for ourselves and ways in which we can educate the industry on Curvy Artist inclusivity. #castcurvy
@CURVYARTISTSCOLLECTIVE Being the Curvy Artists that we are, we are here to bring our visions to life! And as the saying goes, "Seeing is believing." The CAC Instagram account provides the platform for Curvy Artists to be seen in ways the entertainment industry hasn't yet been able to perceive. So write a post about your experience being a Curvy Artist, or post that pic of you about to kiss the person of your dreams with a caption like, "Curvy folk fall in love too! #castcurvy for your next romcom" and show the world what's possible!
