Floriography : symbolic language of flowers.
This particular project in the series focuses on the dichotomy of urban resilience and adaptation, with the abundance of wilderness.
For the urban side, we center plants that thrive in spite of, or even because of, interacting with the human altered ecosystem. Resilience and determination, unstoppable forces with a sharp or poisonous edge.
Dandelion, jimsonweed, knapweed, and other powerful weeds puncture the asphalt and interweave with the fence. The invertebrates are apex predators.
For the wilderness leg we focused on upstate New York with the biodiversity and bounty of forest and wetland species. Many edible and medicinal species interwoven with species that act as emblems of interconnectedness.
Wild blueberries, fiddlehead ferns, squirrel corn, wild oats, sorrel, northern blue flag iris, lady slipper orchid, mosses and the ghost pipe. The insects are pollinators and decomposers, caretaking and tending the whole cycle of the ecosystem.
