Kriyol Dance Collective

Kriyol Dance Collective Since 2016, Kriyol Dance! creates original performance works focused on the preservation of Black diasporic culture and Haitian culture. Kriyol Dance!

The group develops and facilitates performance, classes, workshops, and community-engaged programming. Introducing Community-based Public Health Arts Collective in Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn, New York – January 1st, 2018 – In Brooklyn, and particularly for the Haitian community thriving here, we pride ourselves on creating spaces for community togetherness and healing, using the tools our ancestors im

printed upon us. Memory, tradition, and innovation become the very tools that help define and generate a spirit of embodied resistance. This is the tenet that centers the work of newly developed artist- collective, Kriyol Dance! Founded in 2016, Kriyol Dance! is a collective of artist-leaders working together to create one platform advocating for the unapologetic voices of Black arts, and Haitian culture in particular, through collaborative and unified work and intervention. Each artist participating in the collective creates original work focused on the preservation of Black diasporic culture, Haitian culture, and the promotion of Haitian life through engagement arts including, but not limited to, artistic work that involves community voices, community issues, and the Haitian state of affairs. Artist-leaders work to develop innovative and multi-pronged approaches to use art as a tool for commentary as opposed to simply entertainment. Importantly, as members of Kriyol Dance!, we hope to make normative the discussions of Haitian culture that do more than harp on the Haiti’s poverty. We aim to continuously place the focus on discussion of Haitian lives both in-country and abroad.

In Kriyol Dance!, we use dance, music, poetry, and writing to develop, advance, and uplift our communities. Currently, we center this work in Brooklyn, New York and in Port-au-Prince, Haiti through the partnership and lasting influence of Societe St. Michel Archange, its members, and its extended youth community living in Rue Magazine de L'etat. Our work transcends cultural backgrounds and belief systems thereby placing its focus on individual and community wellbeing, public health, and the power of arts to create social change. Collective envisions its role in the future of socially engaged arts as that which helps to curate the next generation of activists, visionaries, and advocates. Recently in our work, we’ve worked to answer the question: how do we cultivate community systemically, keeping culture thriving in spite of detrimental changes in physical, social, and political contexts? We’re finding that this starts by developing praxis built upon collective consciousness – making community aware of the social, political, and historical realities that seek to limit us, through cultural and social practice, to act in solidarity and essentially transform those realities. This means privileging stories and lived experiences to build the collective self, and unlocking a people’s creative capacity to make change! Find out more information about what we do on our website, kriyoldance.wix.com/kriyol. If you would like to partner with us or collaborate on artistic projects please email our artistic director Veroneque, [email protected]. If you are a performance, visual, and/or musical artist, passionate about culturally-based and community-rooted arts practices, and you would like to join our team, email a short letter of interest and CV to [email protected]. This summer we hosted for yet another installation in our on-going partnership. The Pouvwa dance workshop was an opportunity to reflect, reimagine, and retell the stories of our shared history as a Black people across the diaspora. Mèsi JAE pou travay ou!

We are deeply sustained by our connection to Haiti’s drum traditions and the musicians that support it at home and across the diaspora. Together, Kriyol Collective and Rasin Okan are working to elevate the unique, creative, and artistic bridge between Haitian traditional rhythms and contemporary roots sound. Along the way, we’re emphasizing the importance of immigrant stories, the impact of community networks, and the value of cultural programming. Thank you KOSANBA () for accepting our proposal to present on your work through an immersive performance experience.

POUVWA!! What a special moment to bring embodied conversations of power and heritage to the fore. Thank JAE for coming to Brooklyn, NY to share your movement and teachings with us .

This is the third workshop Kriyol Dance! hosted for and it was meant to support creative efforts related to JAE’s newest work Pouvwa.

Pouvwa (Power), utilizes Haitian-folkloric dance, Afro-electronica, live drumming, visual installations, and workshops, to invite us all to galvanize our power to create a new world. Pouvwa invites us all to identify ways in which we can utilize our personal power to create a new world while also naming the realities of structural, political, and cultural misuse of power across the globe. JAE hopes Pouvwa fosters interconnectedness and illuminates shared connections of oppression and liberation around the globe. Through Haitian-folkloric choreography and free community workshops, Pouvwa engages a wide-ranging audience to share definitions of power, reflect on how colonialism has systematically disenfranchised shared culture, and identify action steps towards creating a world that is beneficial to all.

Thank you to everyone who made an effort to show up ready to move and ready to share!

Tag yourself if you spot you moving! 🥹♥️♥️

Montina is a humble mastermind — his stories, his teachings, his observations all manifest in his lyrics. It takes no time for Montina to envision a sound and embrace a song. That is what you hear in the first Rasin Okan album released for streaming. Our Sanba and our maestro holds movman mizik rasin Ayiti nou an FIRM. Mèsi Maestro pou efò e pou kouraj ou. Se nou mem ki pou di w mèsi e bese nou devan don mistè yo ba w la.

Mezanmi woyyy! We are still beaming after the “Jou Ma Lonje” Album Release hosted by Oyasound Productions and Kriyol Collective at the July edition of REKÒLTE ✨🔥

The special event, themed Nan Vil Bonè, honored the sacred annual pilgrimage to Saut-d’Eau—a journey for healing, miracles, and protection that so many Haitians make around July 16th. With a mini-dance course on the Petwo, non-stop House music lined with Haitian roots melodies, and an exclusive performance of Rasin Okan’s original songs echoing the courage of Haiti’s freedom fighters while calling us to remember, reconnect, and rise… it was truly a powerful evening of music, memory, and movement.

Together, we celebrated culture, connection, and the enduring power of Haitian roots. 🙌🏾🇭🇹✨

✨IMPORTANT UPDATE✨WE WANT TO THANK Makini Sacred Arts FOR ENCOURAGING US TO CREATE A SPACE TO COLLECT DONATIONS FOR THE WORK KRIYOL COLLECTIVE X RASIN OKAN ARE DOING TOGETHER. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR TAKING A LOOK AND CONSIDERING THIS ASK!

We are Rasin Okan, a Brooklyn-based Haitian roots band carrying the flame of Haiti’s mizik rasin po sèch movement. Founded in 1999, by musicians displaced in New York and led by Jean E. Montina (Sanba Mayombe), our group honors the spiritual and revolutionary traditions of Haitian Vodou ceremonial music—performed with minimal electric accompaniment.

We’re raising $10,000 to support creative effort related to our new album, Jou Ma Lonje, a powerful musical reflection on Haiti’s recent history and a tribute to ancestral memory, not just resilience. With your help, we will bring this album to life and host two immersive release events that celebrate Haiti’s cultural legacy. Your support ensures this vital music and message reaches the hearts of our community and beyond.
