WARHOL x BASQUIAT. This photo, recreated by Brendan Burke for my Andy Warhol musical, was used to promote the highly anticipated 1985 show of the two painters’ work. Warhol was world famous at this time and Basquiat was the hot, new kid on the art scene. The media liked to portray him as a bad boy graffiti artist/brilliant street urchin, but Basquiat came from a middle class family, was well versed in poetry and jazz and spoke three languages. Despite the massive success he experienced in his early career, the reluctance to be accepted by the snooty NYC art crowd was likely a factor in his decision to paint with Warhol, who was firmly ensconced in the firmament of High Society.
Many say that Warhol was like a father to him during their friendship and work together. Just as many more say that Warhol used him for relevancy…fresh blood. Until meeting and being inspired by Basquiat, Warhol had not painted by hand in years, instead focusing on his highly profitable portraiture commissions via his renowned silkscreening process.
The reviews were savage. The New York Times called it yet another of Warhol’s “manipulations,” with Basquiat coming across as the Pop Art King’s “mascot.” The two painters never spoke again…until now.
On February 20th, “The Trial of Andy Warhol” opens at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater and will reunite these two titans in the afterlife for a long awaited rematch…in song.
