I had the awesome opportunity to talk about my Undyne cosplay with Cosplay in America ! Check out their page & this post if you want to read my interview! ๐๐๐
I wanted to cosplay Undyne because she's a really important character to me! A strong, kindhearted, wlw fish girl! Plus, she was really different from most characters that I'd cosplayed before that, mainly meaning that the hairstyle and prop were going to be new challenges for me. I felt like it would be a chance to test my skills.
The clothes for the costume were actually things I already had since her main outfit is just blue jeans and a tank top. Her boots were bought online and then I HeatnBond-ed some ribbons to them. The most challenging parts for me was the spear and the bald cap. The spear is made out of PVC pipe, paper mรขchรฉ, and Modge Podge and you can kinda tell that it was my first time making a prop from scratch, haha. It came out a little rough, but I was proud of it nonetheless!
For the wig, I briefly considered just using a normal ponytail wig to avoid having to deal with a bald cap, but in the end, I decided to go all out with a bald cap and hair clip! There's a little slit in the back of the cap where I attach the ponytail, and I'm really glad I made that decision. I also wear latex fin ears and a sclera lens in one eye! Unfortunately all the times I've worn her in the past I didn't have any armsocks, so all of my exposed skin was painted. It used to take hours to get into her! At one point I used to wear giant teeth that I sculpted from thermoplastic beads, since Undyne has really sharp, protruding teeth, but I couldn't talk with them in so I scrapped them.
More often than not, I really feel like cosplay saved my life. I grew up without a lot of friends to rely on until I moved to a different city, and that was around the time I started cosplaying. I wouldn't know a quarter of the amazing people I do today without it, and I'm grateful that I pursued this hobby. It's also a nice break from reality sometimes when things are difficult; putting on a costume and just getting lost in having fun with it can really help me de-stress sometimes!
While I have a moment on this platform, I want to remind people that cosplay is for fun! Don't worry about if you've got the perfect wig or if you're missing a prop. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you're comfortable, happy, and have great memories to look back on years from now. Elitism is really toxic, so just remember that cosplay isn't a competition!
