This Saturday, August 15th…the Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Balloon Festival takes place as one of Tennessee’s best all-around summer events! From 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the 8th annual festival fills Townsend with colorful hot air balloons, family fun, food, cold drinks, local vendors, handmade goods, and beautiful views along the edge of the Smokies. The biggest sight comes toward evening, when professional balloonists light their balloons for a glowing display set against the Tennessee mountain sunset.
Visitors can also take short tethered balloon rides when weather conditions allow, giving you a chance to rise above the festival grounds while remaining secured to the ground. The event takes place rain or shine, but all balloon activity depends on weather, with the Balloon Meister making the final safety call that day.
There is also a separate-ticket Sip TN Wine Experience with samples from more than a dozen Tennessee wineries, cider makers, and meaderies. Beyond the balloons, Townsend’s mountain setting makes the evening especially scenic as daylight fades. The festival is also a community fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting the Townsend Volunteer Fire Department and Townsend Elementary School.
