Some days you can do nothing, except thank God. Today was a day like that.

We are all blessed to live in his glory, and none more so than those who live here on the Great Lakes.

What a gift. And I am thankful for his blessing today. Lay your asemaa in thanks and take just a second to appreciate the water as the gift from God that it is.

EVERYONE CAN WEAR RIBBONS!

The ribbon skirts and shirts are stories on fabric. Stories of our mothers back 7 generations!

When you put those ribbons on you feel the power of those ancestors. You walk taller. Your back straightens. Your chin is held high and you feel powerful.

I want that for all of you! So put on your ribbons and let's walk for water!

Man, I love living here!

Nothing makes you humble like standing at the Big Lake when the sky and water connect into endless stars and the ancestors dance with joy where they meet.

My people have watched this celebration right here on this beach for 10,000 years. I feel it. I am rooted here.

Today was opening day of goose hunting season. The fam and I went out and sat in the field for a bit, but it was 91° out here, weirdly... the birds were all headed north!

1883 to 1978: The U.S. government banned traditional Native American spiritual practices, dances, ceremonies, and languages through policies like the federal Code of Indian Offenses.

Anyone caught practicing a Native culture faced arrest, fines, and imprisonment, as the government tried to force assimilation into Christianity.

Native Americans officially regained the legal right to practice their traditional religions and ceremonies on August 11, 1978, when President Jimmy Carter signed the American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA).
