Old Home Place Artistry

Old Home Place Artistry Welcome to Old Home Place Artistry. Fiber arts is my passion and I hope to share that passion with Our view of the Blue Ridge Mountains is spectacular.

This page is about the happenings here at Old Home Place Artistry and there are many, many things happening. I process fleeces (all kinds) and dye and spin the fiber to create one of a kind yarns and finished items. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of the fiber arts by teaching others and holding workshops. All of this takes place in a remodeled granary built in 1890 on my husband's family farm.

These ponchos are fresh from the sewing machine here at Old Home Place Artistry. I prepare the raw silk fabric and then dye and print it with plants from around our property. This is the best time if year for ecoprinting; so, it gets a little crazy.

Yesterday was the day to dye with Japanese indigo. We used the fresh leaves and experimented with two different methods.

Method one involved fresh leaves mixed with salt. Once the leaves started to wilt and produce juice, we added the fabric and worked the leaves and fabric together by hand. It's a lot like kneading dough. This produced the dark teals in the top row.

Method two involved making a slurry in the blender with cold water and fresh leaves, straining out the pulp and placing the remaining liquid and the fibers together in a bowl. They are then mixed and stay in the bowl until the desired color is achieved.

This was an experiment with lots of different yarns and fabrics. We learned a lot. There will be more blues coming. Check the comments on the pictures for more info.
