The Electric Bunker

The Electric Bunker From the ashes of The Moontower to a basement on a hill. We're a small studio with big heart and some radical gear. Let's make a record! client list below.

The Electric Bunker is a small recording studio located in Brighton, Massachusetts, owned and operated by Chris Johnson (Deafheaven, Doomriders, Summoner). The layout here is very simple: one small room to perform and mix in, a vocal/iso booth, and a reliable mix and monitoring setup, coupled with a growing collection of new and vintage mics and gear. This space really works best as an overdub and

mix room, so I tend to take clients to Q Division, Mad Oak, or The Record Company to record basics, based on budget and vibe of the project. We then take the session back to The Bunker to record the finishing touches (guitar solos, vocals, etc), then mix. This saves the client A TON of money. We are also capable of tracking a live band on location as well. This could include a venue, cabin in the woods, the side of a mountain, or possibly, the bottom of the ocean. You tell me...

I am also a touring Front of House Engineer, or "sound guy," and won a Boston Music Award for "Live Sound Engineer of the Year" in 2016. I have mixed in over 200 venues in about 20 countries in North and South America and Europe for a variety of artists. I am also a professional musician and actively perform and write with my band Summoner, Doomriders, and tour pretty heavily with Deafheaven. My rate is $150 for 5 hours or $250 for 10 hours. Ask these clients if I suck to work with in the studio:

Bang Camaro
Bookkeeper
Bottlecaps
Cavelera Conspiracy (just Nate)
Coilguns (Switzerland)
Duck and Cover
Inle
Kunz (Switzerland)
Ladybones
Larcenist
Leather Lung
The Mercy Case
Moons
Nassy
The Network
Oathbreaker (Belgium - live DVD mix)
John Powhida
Reserve
Rhino King
Riff Cannon
Sand Reckoner
Sea
Spring Standards
Stone Hands
The Stray Bullets
Tenafly Vipers
Summoner
Trophy Lungs
Wormwood
Yellabird
Nick Zaino

Then ask these folks if I'm a jerk to work with live (FOH means "sound guy," TM means tour manager, MON means "monitor dude"):

Happy release day! Got a double header today. Last fall between Deafheaven tours, I managed to record a marathon 2 day session of D U T C H G U T S playing their set live at God City with a third guitarist thrown in for good measure. Mixed by me here and mastered by Jack Butcher at Enormous Door, it's a beast of a record and I was stoked to be a part of it. 10 Years of Neglect indeed. Great work fellas.

Release #2 of the day: Leather Lung covering Silverchair's Isreal's Son, tracked by me at Mad Oak, mixed here, and mastered by Zach Weeks at God City. This was a sneaky B side we recorded during the session for LL's Black Sabbath cover for Magnetic Eye Records back in March, which also included me recording a different band (my band Summoner) the same day. Two bands, 3 songs, one day. Oh and one lefty and one righty drummer cause why not right? That was also a marathon. I guess I still like marathons.

And up for considerable honorable mention (because I forgot to post it here like a meatball) is another Magnetic Eye Records band, Ghastly Sound, who recorded two tracks with Urian Hackney that I mixed, and Zach Weeks at God City mastered them. THAT was an exciting project to be a part of. Good times all around.

Stay safe, stay healthy, keep working on stuff and let's make a god damn record this year because I won't be back on tour for like a year at this rate. Stay tuned.

Update time... since the last post have played 31 shows in 22 countries on 3 continents... so that was fun as hell/time consuming. I also tracked 3 bands in 5 days at God City right before our European tour, and Mourned has released their two song cassette I recorded at God City, mixed by Arthur Rizk.

Next up: wrapping up our Asia tour tonight in Manila, then I will have the pleasure of flying down to New Zealand to record Tuscoma, which will be mixed by Jack Shirley, who has recorded and mixed all of the Deafheaven albums to date. Pretty rad.

I’ll be home this winter and have some time open if anybody wants to record some stuff. Carry on 👋

I recently had the pleasure of mixing this song for this video. Band rules. Vid rules. I think Decibel rules too. Good times!

Boston doom quintet Glacier bring their heavy post-metal freeze to a sweltering temple in their video for album opener “O World! I Remain No Longer Here."

Always nice to see a project I did get a nice nod and write up in Decible :)

Hey, Leather Lung put a little rock n' roll swagger and outlaw country sneer in its sludge metal for you! How thoughtful!

Looooots going on this summer! Eight days in total engineering at God City, a handful at the new New Alliance (place sounds great!), one at Mad Oak this weekend, plus a bunch of mixing work at the Bunker. Off tour until September if anyone wants to squeeze something else in this summer ;)

Hello! Man, these updates are getting fewer and further between these days, but here's what's been up since the last one, aside from touring NZ and Australia, then doing a full North American co-headliner with Baroness, all of which was incredibly boring and not at all fun or enjoyable ;)

Anyhoo, since the last update, Worshipper has released their album we did at God City and The Bunker (which I am very, very proud of and is my first legit "producer" credit, I believe). Before that, I did a live mix for REVOLVER Magazine of Deafheaven's newest single "Black Brick" on that Baroness tour. Once I got home, I edited some drums for Kurt on the new Sect record (mems of Cursed, Fallout Boy, etc), recorded Plagues at God City, and booked a session at the brand new New Alliance East: Mixing, Mastering, Production, Song Writing location. The A Team also put out this live video I recorded and mixed (do we just call that producing now?) at Mid East in December.

Hmmm I think that's it for now? I'll be mixing Converge at a fest in Vancouver next week that I'm playing with DOOMRIDERS (hell yeah!), and that all sounds like a dang good time to me.

Stay tuned, stay classy, and LET'S MAKE A RECORD :)

Hi everybody,
it's been a long time since the last update, but here's what we've been up to since September, in vague chronology:

-Recorded Leather Lung at God City
-Mixed and mastered Prisoners Cinema
-played 50 shows in 65 days with Deafheaven
-The Wall Redux (Magnetic Eye Records) came out, which I recorded and mixed a few tracks on.
-Mixed the Worshipper record we did at God City this summer
-Got the Aneurysm record back from mastering
-Got nominated for a Grammy for playing bass with Deafheaven
-Did some mobile recording at Mid East
-Wrapping up Leather Lung mixes this week

So there ya have it. The back half of 2018 has been crammed with more music than I ever pictured being a part of... and we got a god damned Grammy nomination. Not a bad year all in all.

Happy Holiday and here's to more music in 2019!

Now, let's make a record :)

..and here I am mixing something, somewhere, on tour. As our tour manager Edgar said when he took this picture "this guys is always working," or something like that. Stay busy people. It's the only way.

Guys, check out this live Deafheaven track I mixed for this Revolver piece. It’s way at the end, but you can see how I spent my summer in the meantime ;)

Backstage dancing, West Coast vibes and a stunning full live performance of "Honeycomb"

Our Story

The Electric Bunker is the home studio of Chris Johnson (bass man in Deafheaven, Doomriders, and Summoner), located in Brighton (Boston), MA. The layout here is very simple and basically functions the B Room of a larger studio. We’ve got one small room to perform and mix in with an attached vocal/iso booth and an ever expanding collection of new and vintage mics and gear and instruments to work with. Generally, I will begin a project someplace like New Alliance, God City, Q Division, or Mad Oak to record basics based on budget and vibe of the project. We then take the session back to The Bunker to record the rest (as much or as little as we didn’t need the larger space for - ie: anything but drums really). This saves the client a TON of money, without compromising quality, and also allows for extra time to be put into things like getting the best vocal takes and working on guitar solos without sitting in a studio that’s costing us $600 day. We are also capable of tracking on location with high quality converters and gear. I’ve taken the rig to record at practice spaces and venues, but I would love to take it to your cabin in the woods, the side of a mountain, or possibly, the bottom of the ocean. You tell me... I am also (though not quite so much these days) a touring Front of House Engineer, or "sound guy." I have mixed in over 200 venues in more than 20 countries on four continents and won a Boston Music Award for "Live Sound Engineer of the Year" in 2016. Good times.
