One of the biggest things that impacts how your piercing heals? Downsizing your jewelry.
The longer post you’re initially pierced with is there on purpose — it allows room for swelling during the early healing phase. But once that swelling period is over, keeping that extra length in can actually create healing complications.
Downsizing helps stabilize the piercing so the channel can heal cleaner, straighter, and healthier.
Most piercings are ready for a downsize around 4–8 weeks depending on placement and individual healing. Some piercings may even require more than one downsize depending on the initial length needed to accommodate swelling.
