Miranda Thomas was trained on the wheel to make jugs at Michael Cardew's pottery in Cornwall, England. Michael himself was trained from a long line of craftsmen in the North Devon tradition of making jugs & pitchers for hundreds of years.

These traditional methods of making can be seen in our new Jug Collection, make sure to check them out!

In our eyes each jug has its own personality and like us, no two are alike.

“These lively jugs are exciting and exacting for each potter to throw with their classical bellied forms. When making our jugs the criteria is; a full egg-shaped belly, an athletic shoulder, strong neck with a nice nape, lip, a steady foot, and a well sprung pulled handle, to carry weight."

Last night was a remarkable memorable moment for all of us through the ages at ShackletonThomas… as Missy ( Charlotte Lanahan ) retired after 32 years of helping build and guide our company through thick and thin.❤️
Many of her fellow work mates from those years gathered together to pay tribute to her and her tremendous endurance kindness and strength. We are in awe of her .
We will be forever grateful and wish her the happiest days under our sun. 🌞 And many, many days freely carving up the slopes , on skiis and bikes, travelling to see friends, and reading by the lake in Maine.
Good luck Charlotte for all you have done. We treasure you. ✨

From Master Potter to Pottery Apprentice, our craftspeople love the tradition and techniques behind their craft.

Isabelle Jenne - Pottery Apprentice
"As an apprentice, wheel throwing and form are still very new to me, so a lot of the work I do in the studio is with decoration. The most delightful pattern I’ve learned to paint is the forget-me-not. The simplicity and sweet elegance of the painting seems to reach out and hold on to you, much like the cling of wild forget-me-nots . I love the way the deep blue pigment flows effortlessly out of the tip of our “little beak” brush for the petals. The rest of my week is spent working at Brook and Blossom Farm in Pomfret where I get to harvest forget-me-nots for bouquets. It’s a beautiful connection between the two jobs.

It has also been a gift to learn Miranda’s calligraphic lettering for the alphabet mugs and inscriptions. The Roman-style lettering can be traced back to the Trajan Column which was inscribed around 110 AD. Each geometrically-based letter with its strong pillars and serifs connects us to a 2,000-year lineage of artists. This is the very heart of Shackleton Thomas: keeping the flame of traditional craftsmanship alive!"

The details in our furniture and pottery require a high level of precision our craftspeople have mastered over the years.

Shea Rodgers - Master Furniture Maker
"I like making the Tuscan style pieces because there is multiple layers of molding. Everything has to line up just right and it's satisfying when you get it worked out. After you put the main construction together you get to apply the molding into a little groove with a mitered corner and it's really fun."

Not only do our craftspeople bring their talent and precision while making, they also preserve and pass down a rich cultural history inherent in their craft.

Megan Gray - Potter
"While there are so many unique creations that come out of the Miranda Thomas Pottery Studio my favorites of the collection include historic elements that come from our artistic lineage. With great potters such as Michael Cardew, Bernard Leach, and Alan Caiger-Smith of Aldermaston making up only a few of our predecessors, skill, technique and inspiration abound.

The history of functional pottery is rich and honed by centuries to produce pieces that are both beautiful and also work exactly as intended. From something as simple as the spout of a jug that doesn't dribble to glaze chemistry refined by years of trial and error, we owe much of the work we’re able to produce today to these past potters handing down their boundless knowledge. Examples of this in the MTP studio include the Devonshire Line named after the jugs created in North Devon England, celadon glazes originating from the Sung Dynasty, and our signature slipware designs originally made popular by potters of medieval Europe. This is only a small selection of our inherited tradition - many of our forms and glazes give a gentle nod to the incredible potters that came before and taught us much of what we know today."

We take pride in the quality of our products, and the mastery our craftspeople bring to hand-building each piece.

Troy Woods - Master Furniture Maker
"I like making the Sleigh Chairs. I have done enough of them that I don't have to spend the time figuring it out. They are familiar, and the carving is fun and has some individual expression.

I also like making custom pieces like the liquor cabinet that had the Spalted Maple paneling. It had a lot of challenges to solve because it was so complex."

With Labor Day marking the change from Summer to Fall, we wanted to take the time to celebrate the talented and incredibly skilled craftspeople at the heart of our company.

From the precise hand-carved details adorning our kitchen dressers, to the continuation of a rich cultural and artistic lineage passed down through the hands of our potters, we invite you to learn more about what the people behind our beautiful products enjoy making most.

Christi Becker - Master Potter & Pottery Manager
“I really enjoy decorating the collections of Miranda Thomas Pottery, especially the brushed and carved collections. I find the process both meditative and challenging. It keeps my brain engaged and constantly pushes me to find the best composition for each form. Every decoration is done freehand, with no stencils or templates, so we create little roadmaps from one mark to the next and let each design unfold naturally across the pot."

Jim Blanchard - Master Furniture Maker
"I enjoy all the details in the English Kitchen Dresser and seeing them come together. Details like the glass doors, crown molding, raised panels, dovetail drawers, etc. It is complex and has a lot of things that have to come together just right.”
