Most people blame jokers when they’re learning Mahjong.

But the truth is, jokers usually aren’t the hardest part.

When you’re brand new, you’re learning the card, the tiles, the Charleston, exposures, passing, calling tiles, and trying to keep up with the game all at the same time. That’s a lot for anyone.

Then someone starts explaining all the rules about when you can and can’t use a joker, and suddenly it feels like your brain is full.

The good news? Once the rest of the game starts making sense, jokers often become one of the easiest parts of Mahjong to understand.

If jokers still feel confusing, don’t worry. It probably means you’re still learning the game—not that you’re bad at it.
