Good afternoon everyone! Just a quick reminder of the signs and symptoms for heat related emergencies. Please, do not take this lightly. If you notice any of these in yourself, or someone else, be sure to take action. As the weather really starts to increase, please stay hydrated! Do not forget to check on the elderly! Lastly, keep an eye on our pet friends, the heat affects them also. Stay safe, stay hydrated and stay healthy!

Earth Month 🌍

Gibbons are the most endangered primates in the world. Their main threats include habitat loss, hunting, and illegal trade.

Mothers are killed so the babies can be stolen for the pet trade. Primates, as pets, are deprived of the opportunity to express their species-typical behavior. They are often abandoned (or neglected in substandard conditions) when their cuteness factor wears off and they mature into adults.

Here’s how you can help:

Do not support any facility or vacation spot that offers pictures with baby primates. After the photo op, it is not a happily-ever-after for the animal.

Support conservation efforts through donations or by changing the dialogue when you hear the classic line “I want one as a pet!”.

April is Earth Month 🌍

All month, we will share small actions that make a big difference to the animals on our planet.

Soccer nets are a common sight in our parks and backyards. Unfortunately, they pose a threat to wildlife. Owls especially can get caught in them while hunting. Bird bones are very fragile and break easily if the animal is trying to free itself. Owls can die from their injuries or from capture myopathy (a state of extreme stress).

Here’s how you can help:

Old routine: leaving nets up year round

New routine: rolling the net up from the bottom and securing it to the top bar after each use, a small act that could save an owl 🦉

When will our Sandhill crane eggs hatch?

Never.

Once again, we have come to the season of eggs, so many eggs. However, our sandhill cranes are both GIRLS. Egg laying is a natural, seasonal process. Their bodies make the eggs, with the shell being the last step. If a male is around to fertilize the egg before the shell is formed, it becomes an embryo. No male - no chick.

You may notice that we do leave the eggs with Puck and One-eyed Jack, for about 3 weeks. The reason: if we were to remove the egg immediately, that would signal their bodies to make new eggs. That can take a lot out of them, physically. They could become calcium-deficient if their bodies constantly produced eggs to replace the lost ones. They are prolific layers; you may see eggs from now til June.

Please don’t disturb them during egg season. They are VERY protective. Your best bet is to tell them how lovely they are and perhaps compliment their “song”. 🥚

V is for Vulture!

We’ve had many questions recently about the vulture committee who has settled into our zoo. There have always been a few vultures who have routinely stopped by to visit our nonreleasable turkey vulture Snape. But, about a year ago, we noticed more dropping in. And more. And more. Almost entirely black vultures with a turkey vulture sprinkled in for variety.

Long story short, they like it here. Their favorite animals are: Holly Bear, Sassy Pig, and our red river hogs. You can catch them playing in their exhibits, perched in nearby trees, and splashing in our pond. As long as you’re still breathing 😉, nature’s clean up crew won’t bother you.

We’ve even had a few tagged birds. The two pictured are from Hershey, PA and Kempton, PA. Biologists keep track of these birds to help protect them. New World vultures are doing fine right now; but there’s concern that their numbers may plummet in the same way Old World vultures have.

Vultures are an intelligent, fascinating species. On your next visit, take the time to enjoy their antics!
