🧵 Which stitch should you use? The answer might surprise you.

I used to think there was ONE "right" way to hand sew everything.

Turns out, the "perfect" invisible ladder stitch on my toddler's ripped shirt was a waste of 30 minutes—he outgrew it before it ripped again! 😅

Meanwhile, the quick backstitch I did on my husband's work pants has held strong for 2 years.

Here's what changed everything: Learning WHEN to use each stitch, not just HOW.

That's why I created this decision flowchart for the 7 essential hand stitches every beginner should know.

The main difference is that the overhand Stitch is a simple stitch that goes straight across the edge of the fabric. The overcast is looped continuously over the edge of the fabric, wrapping around to protect the edge from fraying.

So basically, to do a handkerchief hem stitch by hand, fold the fabric edge twice narrowly, press it, and sew tiny slip stitches along the fold for a neat, invisible finish.

I tried many stitch patterns for the past years. However, I know that as a newbie, finding the right pattern can be quite confusing. You don’t know where to begin or what to do next. Also, you can’t jump into some complicated patterns like a cross or a mech pattern.
