Launched in 2022, the White Squirrel Artisans Market (WSAM) was created to shine a spotlight on hyperlocal makers, musicians, and small businesses—all while raising funds for local nonprofit organizations. In 2023, the event found its new home at the Porter Center at Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina. Founded and organized by Kyzandrha Zárate and proudly presented by Billy McCoy of REMAX Land of the Waterfalls, WSAM is more than just a market—it’s a movement. “My mission is to create an affordable, safe space for local artisans to showcase and sell their work,” says Zárate. “Through these events, we are building bridges of opportunity between artisans and their community.”

The market has become a vibrant space where residents and visitors alike can support local creativity and give back to meaningful causes. Since its inception, WSAM has raised approximately $9,000 for local nonprofits. Many artisans who got their start at the market have since grown into staple vendors in businesses throughout Brevard. With every event, WSAM continues to foster a stronger, more connected, and creatively enriched community.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DESSERT DAY! We have the perfect WSAM European-inspired Christmas Market Vendor Spotlight 🎄

Kilwins, chocolate, fudge and ice cream is located at 52 West Main Street in downtown Brevard and is operated by John Mathieu. When in downtown Brevard, visit John and his team, sample some homemade fudge, original recipe ice cream and indulge in the magic of Kilwins high-quality products and exceptional hospitality every day of the week!

John has joined us for a few years now, and we never leave the market without one or two of their apple pie caramel apples and chocolate sea-salt caramel apples. Take it from us, they are heavenly!

These are words that jump to mind when describing singer-songwriter and Mayor of Babetown, Darby Wilcox, whose powerful and commanding presence leaves her audiences captivated, charmed, and fascinated. With the dual powers of her tenderness and ferocity, she makes you feel as if you have been given a gift; a precious glimpse into the deepest depths of her secret soul. Her songs are places you’ve been before. They are pain. They are joy. They are honesty. They are your story through her eyes. It is this unadulterated vulnerability and strength in honesty that leaves Darby’s audiences with the feeling that ‘this too shall pass and in the morning I will try again,’ empowered, inspired, and a little misty-eyed. You can find Darby Wilcox in a plethora of venerable listening rooms, patios, and galleries throughout the Southeast, and you can find her music on any streaming platform where music is available. She recently graced the Oskar Blues Brewery stage a handful of times last month.

Jenny makes wheel thrown and hand built pottery that reflects the beautiful mountain surroundings of her home and studio. She enjoys exploring the trails, rivers, meadows, lakes and woods of our area and that passion is revealed in the wide variety of mugs and cups that she makes in addition to bowls, pitchers and other pots for the kitchen.

You can find Jenny and her pottery at the Transylvania Farmers Market on Saturday mornings, and we're absolutely delighted to welcome her to WSAM!

WSAM European-inspired Christmas Market Music Spotlight 🎶

Kicking off the festivities next month is the Mark Queen Bluegrass Trio.

A lively bluegrass flatpicking guitar show featuring the exceptional picking of Mark Queen and JonPaul Sepulveda, backed by the solid, driving bass of Jonathan Gray. The trio brings traditional bluegrass to life alongside classic fiddle tunes, showcasing intricate guitar work, tight instrumental interplay, and the energy and spirit of Appalachian string music. Expect plenty of fast picking, familiar melodies, and authentic bluegrass sounds.

If you're local, chances are, you've seen Mark perform. He's a regular performer at Jeter Mountain Farm and surrounds himself with some of the best players for that classic Appalachian sound. This is the FIRST time these locals have performed as a trio, so be sure to come early to enjoy the sounds of this truly talented group of musicians!
