The Legacy...

An accordion player sits in a favorite recliner surrounded by dense palmettos, embodying the musical traditions and deep cultural roots of South Louisiana.

Inspired by the hurricane relief work that I did in another lifetime down in Vermilion and Iberia parishes. While travelling around I met an older man in a rural area who lamented the loss of his accordion to a hurricane’s storm surge. He lost his home and everything in it. While not a professional musician or a known artist, he enjoyed playing and it
was of great importance to him. I was fortunate enough to link him up with a relief program that was able to replace his accordion at no cost. This was decades ago, but I still remember his excitement when he got the new accordion, trying it out by playing an old Iry LeJeune song that
echoed out across the sugar cane fields. This painting is a homage to
that moment in time.

Homes were destroyed by wind and flood water. Physical possessions were
lost, but with time the enduring spirit and culture of a people lived
