In February 2021, Pritchard began photographing the sea every morning, a ritual meant to steady her as her mother's health declined. What she found instead was that time doesn't hold still the way we want it to.

Artist talk time. 🧡 Join us Saturday, September 5th at 5:30pm for a conversation with photographer and UVM professor Ace Lehner on portraiture, identity, and representation.

Lehner will dig into their creative practice and how photographic images shape (and complicate) the way we see ourselves and each other. Expect a conversation that treats portraiture as more than just capturing a likeness: it's a space for dialogue about visibility, authorship, and the relationship between photographer, subject, and viewer.

Meet Elizabeth Bailey, another of the ten artists in Memory Is a Verb.

Bailey's series The House Next Door began when a reclusive neighbor died with no one to claim her, her belongings, or her memory. Bailey kept returning to the empty house, piecing together a life from salvaged letters, photos, and personal items, some pulled straight out of a dumpster.

What started as curiosity turned into something closer to inheritance. The neighbor's story became part of Bailey's own memory, leaving her with both gratitude and real grief for a life that otherwise would have simply disappeared.

It's a meditation on how one person's untold story can reshape someone else's, and a reminder that empathy sometimes starts with trespassing.

Last week to see Memory is a Verb, including these pieces by Dena Eber.

After moving to a wooded property in Ohio, Eber turned her camera toward the land's older histories, the Shawnee and Wyandot peoples who lived there long before her, and found herself asking a simple, unsettling question: whose land is this? The work traces her search for an answer across Ohio, New Mexico, and Israel. 🧡

New Book of the Week is here, and Luke's bringing back more than just photos. 📚🇯🇵

This episode: a look inside his recent trip to Japan, including stops at some standout bookstores and galleries along the way. But the real highlight is his newest acquisition: Souvenir Shop by Bharat Sikka, published by Super Labo.

The book started as something personal: Sikka's daughter fell in love with Japan through Studio Ghibli and writers like Murakami, and he brought her along on the trip that became this project. Luke found himself relating hard. Turns out he's got a daughter with the same pull toward Japanese culture, and that connection runs through this whole conversation.

VCP just landed a three-year grant from the Vermont Arts Council, $30,000 total, going straight into keeping our doors open and our programming running. 🧡

Grants like this are the quiet, unglamorous stuff that makes the exhibitions and events possible. We're grateful, and we're not stopping here: our first Artist in Residence program just launched this fall, and we've got more in the works.
