Could be cool. I get to talk about the Yellow Barn sound gig: recording, reinforcement and the sound of glaciers crumbling into the sea . . .

Yellow Barn Patio Noise is back with our sound man extraordinaire, Julian McBrowne! Join us on November 1st at 7pm for a Zoom conversation with Julian hosted by YB artistic director Seth Knopp.
Request the Zoom link and watch videos from last summer in the Big Barn: www.yellowbarn.org
With the release of video recordings from the 2021 Summer Season, there is no better time for a conversation with Yellow Barn's sound and recording engineer, Julian McBrowne.
What is Julian doing when he disappears behind that side door in the Big Barn? What does it take to fill a garden with the sound of Muir Glacier? How did Julian and YB's artistic director Seth Knopp weave together decades of memories for our 50th Anniversary celebration? What is it like to make Yellow Barn Music Haul sound?
Bring your curiosity, your ears, and your sense of humor! Julian has been with for us some of our most memorable performances.

When making a record someone needs to be responsible for the big picture. Someone needs to be looking at how the individual choices are going to all fit together. Maybe you need a producer?

When I taught Audio Engineering in NYC, I tried to give my students an early reality check with this spiel, “I know you’re imagining the day when you’re standing at the recording desk, (and you know what ALL of the buttons do) and on the other side of the glass - your favorite band! Ok, now FORGET that, cause it almost never happens!”

Still - one day, back in the time warp of being a freelance engineer in NY, I got a call to sub in at RPM (!) for a session with Adam Shlesinger and Chris Collingwood. Mostly guitar overdubs I think, but I remember how good it felt to do a pro job and be a fan too. RIP Adam. Goddamn the virus.

Really basic. Direct to wax cylinder.

Horn that was used to amplify the signal that in turn excited a needle that would record those acoustic vibrations onto a Cylinder. Notice the placement of the Horn which is picking up the singer playing the piano, which in turn is on a wooden riser which probably was used to further acoustically amplify the resonance of the instrument and to allow for more directional pick up from the singer. No control room, no monitoring, talk about flying by the seat of your pants here. Notice the tubular bells on the side and the simplicity of this set-up.

It is my great pleasure to be the recording and balance engineer for the Yellow Barn 2018 Summer Festival in Putney VT. Here's the first performance of the season. Video by Michael Hanish, my bud at the best summer gig around! Enjoy.

Proud to say that Jack and I recorded a bunch of McGruff PSAs right here at Hidden Drive in Brattleboro, and had a great time doing it! Thanks Jack!
