• the 13th of 14 siblings; his father was a native of
Kyrgystan who bred horses for the Russian Army
• times were tough; left home in Moscow as a child
• fled to Constantinople in to escape the
Russian Revolution in 1917
• made it to Paris in 1923 where he supported
himself by playing music.
• Inspired by KANDINSKY, but taught by Abstract
artists Robert and Sonia DELAUNAY.
•.used bold color to compete with stark contrast,
seeking to create an emotional response
• By the 1930’s POLIAKOFF had earned his
reputation as a major abstract artist in
l’Ecole de Paris.

• apprenticed at a printing house as a teenager
to learn the trade from the ground up.
• formal art study at l’Ecole des Beaux Arts
• his poster art captured the 1920-30s Paris jazz
scene with a highly stylized Art Deco focus.
• active in theatre set design for over 40 years
• his 1925 R***e Negre poster helped launch the
career of his muse/mistress Josephine BAKER
• he created almost 2000 different art posters as
well as many costumes and theater stage sets
• recognized as France’s greatest poster artist
• in 2003 Paul COLIN’ ‘Blackbirds at the Moulin
Rouge’ poster sold at Swann Galeries NYC
for $ 167,500 USD

• at 18 he began formal art studies at l’Ecole des Arts
Decoratifs in Paris.
• became a sergeant in the French army in WWI.
• upon his return to Paris after the war he became
enthralled by the Fauve Movement and Cubism.
• he fused the bold colors of Fauvism with the angular
geometry in Cubism
• worked with fellow artists Andre L’HOTE, MARQUET
and GROMAIRE from the 1920s
• His paintings were featured in both the 1925 and 1937
Paris Exposition Universelle
• he regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon des
Independants in the 1930s- 40s
• painted with LEGER and Raoul DUFY in the 1950s
• International fame led to travel to Japan, Hong Kong
and India to paint and exhibit.

• discovered the art community in Montparnasse
after receiving a Law Degree in Paris in 1909
• enrolled in the Paris Academie de La Palette
• wounded in the WWI Battle de la Somme (1916)
• browns and ochre colors of his studio served
as a ‘filter’ for his early works of art
• elements of Cubism are clearly apparent
• fame arrived when important French art
collector Dr. GIRARDIN bought GROMAIRE’S
entire collection at a Paris gallery exhibition
(later donated to the Paris Musee d’Art Moderne
upon Dr. GIRARDIN’s death)
• by choice, he created only about 10 paintings/yr
• exhibited at Galerie Louis Carre from 1947
• Professor d’Art at l’Ecole National Superieure
• Grand Prix National des Arts Francais in 1958

Man - Abstract Composition - 1964

• born Emile GASTON DUCHAMP to a family of
artists that included brother Marcel DUCHAMP
and Raymond DUCHAMP-VILLON
• chose Jacques VILLON as pseudonym to
distinguish himself from the other artists in his
family and honor medieval poet Francois VILLON
• while classical works by Edgar Degas first
captured his interest, he gradually shifted to
art movements of the day; Fauvism, Cubism
and Abstract Impressionism.
• helped bring European Modern Art to NYC in
1913 at the prestigious NY Armory Art Show.
• by the1930’s he was more famous in America
than in Europe
• awarded Grand Prix at the 1956 Venice Biennale
