Sometimes recovery doesn't look powerful.
Sometimes it looks like simply still being here.
A little cracked.
A little worn down.
Carrying things nobody else can see.
But still standing.
Some of you may recognize this little kiwi.
The kiwi originally comes from the animated short film Nuggets, a simple but incredibly powerful portrayal of addiction. It shows the progression from that first incredible high, to chasing the feeling again, to needing more and more, until eventually the kiwi's entire world becomes dark.
It explains addiction beautifully.
But we want recovery to be beautiful, too.
So in our version, the kiwi's story doesn't end in the darkness.
He's still cracked. We aren't pretending the past didn't happen. He's still carrying the evidence of everything he's been through.
But he's standing.
And this time, there's a sunrise in front of him.
Because recovery doesn't erase our stories. It gives us the opportunity to keep writing them.
At Unity Through Recovery, we believe people deserve the chance to see another sunrise. We believe in meeting people where they are, reducing harm, carrying Narcan, connecting people with resources, listening without judgment, and standing beside people whether they're ready for recovery today or not.
Because keeping someone alive today gives them the opportunity to choose something different tomorrow.
The original kiwi showed us what addiction can take away.
Our kiwi reminds us of what recovery can give back.
Hope.
