This week's CD is Once Blue - Once Blue. Recorded and released in 1995 on EMI, it was the group’s only release. Once Blue was vocalist Rebecca Martin and guitarist and principal songwriter Jesse Harris. Martin is a talented vocalist with a nice voice. Harris is best known for his work with Norah Jones. In hindsight, one can hear echoes of this album in Jones’ debut album Come Away With Me. Backing Martin and Harris up is bass, drums, and acoustic/electric guitar, in addition to Harris’ acoustic guitar. It is a sparse instrumentation that does well in highlighting Martin’s voice. One could say it is a singer-songwriter album with hints of jazz. It is a lovely album that feels reminiscent of the mid/late 90’s. I first encountered the album when it was played frequently at the Palmyra Tearoom, of which I was a regular. The album was part of the soundtrack of many games of Hearts, Spades, Backgammon and just being young and in my early 20’s. It was very nice to finally listen to this album with my undivided attention. It is a very good album that certainly takes me back. Definitely glad I own it. Attached is an official review followed by a favorite track in the comments.
