Cantabile

Cantabile Cantabile is a Boulder-based choir led by Brian Stone that connects humanity through choral music.

Cantabile, directed by Brian Stone, is an auditioned choral ensemble in Boulder County dedicated to performing a wide range of music from classical to jazz, gospel and folk. Our all-volunteer members represent a wide variety of ages, backgrounds, and musical experience and include professionally-trained musicians as well as enthusiastic amateurs. We strive to bring our appreciation and love for mu

sic to Boulder County and to provide opportunities for both aspiring new professionals and seasoned performers. Founded in the late 1970s as the Saint Cecilia Singers, Cantabile presents five or six concerts annually in the Boulder County area and in other Colorado towns and cities.

A glimpse inside rehearsal: Cantabile preparing Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs for our season finale, Song of Hope.

Vaughan Williams’ exquisite music sets the direct, luminous poetry of George Herbert, with the choir often becoming almost a vocal instrument—supporting and illuminating the baritone soloist.

We’re thrilled to welcome back one of our favorite guest musicians, bass-baritone Paul Griggsby, for this miniature cantata that unfolds with grace and hope.

Join us this weekend, May 15 & 17 in Boulder.

ONE WEEK until Song of Hope — our season finale!

We’re so excited to share a message from our Artistic Director, Brian Stone, about what makes these May concerts special.

Dale Trumbore, Vaughan Williams,’ Florence Price’s, and R. Nathaniel Dett’s—writing in different times and contexts—share a common purpose: music that invites connection, hope, and joy.

Brian shares what he hopes audiences take away: a sense of connection—and a reminder that music can help us hold on to hope, across generations.

When Dale Trumbore visited Cantabile in February for a workshop ahead of our concerts, she shared how meaningful it was to hear A Calendar of Light woven throughout our season:

“The way that you’ve chosen to program it and that you’re all singing it just feels so different in a beautiful way… I almost wish it was done like this all the time — split up into the seasons so that it can be even more grounded to the seasons.” After working with us, Dale observed: “involving the community and recognizing the potential for music to reflect what's happening in the world—or call for change—all of that, I think that's so important to me. So getting to work with a choir and a conductor that had those same values: was really fulfilling.”

This May, we bring that journey to its close with “Song of Hope”, featuring Dale’s “This Blue Morning” from “A Calendar of Light”. Bringing this luminous final movement to life is soprano Emily Murdoch, pictured here.

Join us as we close our “Calendar of Hope” season with music by Dale Trumbore, Florence Price, R. Nathaniel Dett, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

This May, we’re featuring music by R. Nathaniel Dett, an early pioneer of the “concertized spiritual,” blending African-American folk traditions with European art music.

Dett was also the first African-American graduate of Oberlin College, later studying at Eastman and Harvard (including with Nadia Boulanger).

In “Chariot Jubilee,” Dett’s radiant writing spotlights guest tenor Cody Laun, joined by organist Kajsa Teitelbaum.

In spring 2025, Cantabile established a Composers Fund to commission new works and bring composers into our community. This season, we're thrilled to host celebrated composer Dale Trumbore, whose large-scale work “A Calendar of Light” forms the heart of our concerts.

In this clip, you'll hear Cantabile rehearsing "Postlude," the closing movement from Dale's “A Calendar of Light”. This luminous piece calls for reflection and action, with recurring refrains and six call-and-response movements that invite the audience to join in singing. We can’t wait to sing it with you!

Dale joined us for a video session in October and will be with us in person for our February concerts, working with our ensemble during rehearsals and giving talks at both performances. It's a rare opportunity to hear directly from the composer about what inspires her music and messages.

Looking for a unique Valentine's Day gift? Give the gift of this extraordinary concert!
