Greetings!

The lower end of the Campanile String Quartet (Breana McCullough & Haley Slaugh) will be performing with guests violinists Robbie Herbst and Claire Ryan at Innisfree Café tomorrow evening between 7-8:30 p.m. MT.

Under Pressure: Performances of Pride is an event promoting sexual and gender diversity, creativity, and difference through a variety of expressive outlets and artistry. There will be poetry, music, experiences and open mic! Best of all, this event is free and open to the public!

We will be featuring a composition by Margaret Rose Friesen. Here is her biography:

Margaret Rose Friesen is a composer and educator based in Boulder, Colorado. Her compositions focus on storytelling, relationships, and the power of language. Through her compositions and her singing, Margaret pushes the boundaries of gender expectations in classical music with the hope to bring more visibility to the experiences of trans musicians. Margaret was recently commissioned to write an opera scene for CU NOW 2018 Composer’s Fellowship Initiative and is active in the field of chamber music.

Precise Archetypes was composed in the summer of 2016, with the idea to dramatize the structure of classical instrumental music. The piece is based off of character archetypes in Shakespearean comedies, and it tells the tale of two people with wildly constrain worldviews that meet, clash, and ultimately learn from each other. To date, this is one of my favorite pieces that I have written. The crazy flurry of misinformation and conflict found so often in Shakespeare let me be very eccentric with my writing and to explore more abstract forms of communication. Precise Archetypes is a whirlwind of color, mishaps, and theatricality.

We hope to see you there!

We were so delighted to have had the opportunity to participate in a Masterclass with guest artist Alistair MacRae, cellist!

We performed the first movement of the String Quartet in A minor, Op. 51 no. 2 by Johannes Brahms. We are so fortunate to have benefited from the very philosophical and insightful perspective of Mr. MacRae. We have been very excited to apply these new concepts to our own personal practice and in rehearsals!

A special Thank You to the College of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the wonderful Alistair MacRae, cellist.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Campanile String Quartet!

We would like to introduce a wonderful new member of the Campanile String Quartet! We are happy to announce that Haley Slaugh will be our new cellist. Here is her biography:

Boulder native Haley Slaugh has been studying cello since she was five years old. She has held principal positions in many renowned ensembles, including the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, Colorado All-State Orchestra, and the Western States Honor Orchestra Festival. In 2016, she studied in Florence, Italy, where she participated in the Alba Music Festival under the direction of Judith Glyde. Slaugh’s former teachers include Kathleen Starr, Charles Lee, and Thomas Heinrich. She has worked closely with artists such as Zuill Bailey, Silver Ainomäe, Meta Weiss, and Matthew Zalkind. She has also had the opportunity to collaborate with distinguished ensembles such as the Takács Quartet, the Colorado Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, and the Indigo Girls.

Currently, Slaugh is pursuing a degree in cello performance at the University of Colorado, studying with David Requiro. She has outgrown the 1/8th size cello on which she started and now plays a 2016 William Whedbee cello from Chicago.

We are excited about all of the new adventures and concerts we will be pursuing as a group at the University of Colorado, Boulder! We will see you soon!
