Crestone Colorado - July 2023

Originally home to Ute and Comanche tribes, Crestone was first settled during the American Civil War in 1860 and platted in 1880 by George Adams, the owner of the Luis Maria Baca Grant. Crestone experienced a short mining boom during the early 20th century and long term decline thereafter. In 1979 Maurice Strong, who had controlling interest in the town, visited Crestone and fell in love. He decided to grant land to spiritual organizations around the town and its developments. This strategy attracted tourists over time and the population has had consistent growth ever since.

Today, Crestone has a population of approximately 150 and is known for its close proximity to five 14ers including; Crestone Peak and the Crestone Needle, Challenger, and Kit Carson, it’s secluded and scenic environment, Spiritual and New Age centers including Hindu, Zen, and Buddhist monuments and temples, along with an overall laid back and spiritual vibe. Recently, Crestone has been in the news for a cult dubbed “Love Has Won”, whose founder or “Mother-God” recently passed away in 2021.

Westcliffe Colorado - May 2023

Founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1887 due to the extension of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, Westcliffe sits at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range in the Wet Mountain Valley, which was inhabited by the Ute tribes well before its founding. With a small population of 546 and a high elevation of over 7800 feet (some parts as high as 9000 feet), Westcliffe boasts itself as a scenic stargazing area due to its low light pollution. Nearby lake Deweese is a tranquil fishing, hiking, and camping destination for locals and visitors alike, although it has recently developed algae.

Idaho Springs - January 2023

Founded in 1859 during the beginning of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, Idaho Springs has transitioned many times over the years. It’s name has been ever changing, from “Sacramento City” to “Idaho City” to simply just “Idaho”, finally today it is known as Idaho Springs. The historic Argo Tunnel was a hot spot for ore mining and connected nearly all the gold mines between Idaho Springs and Central City through the 19th century and into the early 20th century. During the 1900s, Idaho Springs made national headlines for the 1903 miners strike that fought for an 8 hour workday. Today Idaho Springs is known for its historic downtown, soothing hot springs, as well as an in-between for the Denver and the Ski Resorts. It’s natural beauty, small town feel, and open history makes Idaho Springs a must visit town when traveling up I-70.

Steamboat Springs Colorado - December 2022

Founded in 1874 by James Harvey Crawford, Steamboat Springs boasts beautiful skiing, calming hot springs, and a small town mountain atmosphere. Steamboat has been praised for having exceptionally fresh powder as it gets an average of over 180 inches of snow and 70 days of snowfall yearly, dubbing it “Ski Town USA”.

FUN FACT: Steamboat Springs has produced more Olympic athletes than any town in North America!

Breckenridge Colorado - July 2022

Originally called Breckinridge after US Vice President John Breckinridge, the lettering was changed in 1861 when John Breckinridge sided with the Confederate army at the onset of the Civil War. Much of the town was developed from the 1860s to the 1890s during the Gold Rush, when over 31000 kilograms of gold was produced by the Breckenridge mining district. The town gained new life in 1961 when the Breckenridge ski resort opened its doors to the public. Today Breckenridge boasts world class skiing and tourism.
