Our season finale is now just days away (this coming Sunday, May 21st!) and we couldn’t be more excited to share the stage with the Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Band. We want to give all of you a bit of their backstory so you can see what the hype is about! 🔥

Ezekiel’s Wheels is an internationally-acclaimed klezmer band that brings passion to every performance, from intimate moments of improvisation to rowdy dance music. They perform Jewish music with a contemporary interpretation, and their style has been influenced by the band’s early days performing different genres of music together at Boston subway stations and farmers’ markets.
They went on to win the jury-awarded City Winery Prize for best klezmer ensemble and the Audience Pick Award at the third biennial International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam in 2012, and since then they have performed at renowned venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Shalin Liu Performance Center, and Yidstock. Their repertoire now inclues original as well as traditional instrumental tunes, and songs in Yiddish and English.

You don’t want to miss this amazing collaboration with Phoenix and Ezekiel’s Wheels!

Our May 21st concert at The Substation will feature music by many fantastic composers, and we want to give a quick introduction to some of these amazing works before the show!

The first work on our season finale that we would like to introduce is “Three Ancient Airs from Coplas Sefardies” by Alberto Hemsi. Hemsi was a composer who was also very influential in ethnomusicology. Much like Bartok and Vaughan Williams, he took an interest in traditional folk music and began to study it. For Hemsi, Jewish folk music became his fascination, as he had Sephardic Jewish parents and grew up listening to Jewish melodies. His work “Three Ancient Airs from Coplas Sefardies” was written for string quartet, and is derived from Judeo-Spanish songs. The work has been described as “not heavy-duty, deeply metaphysical string quartet music; rather, it is nine minutes of joy.”

Join us and don't miss a chance to hear this wonderful music live at The Substation!

We loved performing at so much, and we’re thrilled to be heading back next weekend! The substation’s downstairs Workhub space provided a perfectly cozy atmosphere for our parlor concert, but we can’t wait to take over the large upstairs area. Not only is the space roomy, but it also has room for a bar! 🥂

Tickets for our show on May 21st at 7pm available now at tickets.phoenixorch.org

Phoenix’s Parlor Series re-imagines your favorite coffee shop or brewery completely transformed by a night of chamber music. For our season finale on Wednesday night we're excited to be invading The Substation's Workhub in Roslindale.

This concert takes the full Phoenix experience, distills it to the essentials, and lets you get closer to the music than ever as small chamber groups present intimate musical performances. This week's program includes music ranging from Carl Nielsen's whimsical Serenata in Vano to Gioachnio Rossini's incredibly virtuosic Gran Duo for Cello and Bass, played by our very own Leland Ko and Johnny DeMartino!

Continuing our preview for the final two concerts of our season, we want to share a bit more info about the incredible venue for these concerts.

The Substation is a historic building that was built in 1911 as a part of a city-wide network that powered the trolley system of Boston Elevated Railway (BERY), the predecessor to the MBTA. A since demolished coal-fired power plant in South Boston generated the electricity and delivered it by alternating current (AC) through underground cables to the Roslindale substation (along with six other similar stations), which in turn transformed the electricity to direct current (DC) for localized use by the trolleys. The Substation was decommissioned in 1971, and it lay boarded up and vacant for nearly 50 years. Today, the space has been repurposed to build, activate, and connect communities in the heart of the Roslindale neighborhood.

Join us on May 3rd and May 21st at the Substation!
