Set up a trail cam where the creek meets the river. Caught some playful deer and a family of raccoons!

I am enamored of this tiny turtle I spotted while pulling stiltgrass out along the creek the other day. Can't get it out of my head for some reason. Maybe because it is a new creature for me -- apparently it is a spiny softshell turtle (Apalone spinifera), and even though they are not rare, I don't recall having even seen or heard of one before. Also, so tiny! Though they can get large. And that little snout, and eyes! Like a cartoon character.

We had a great work session on Monday. Five of us--including one new volunteer, as well as a friend who has more time and energy now that she just retired--efficiently cleaned up this space and created a log-lined path. We all enjoyed getting to know each other in the process.

We are gradually defining spaces throughout Floodplain Studios -- areas for gathering, exploring, creating, immersing oneself in peaceful quiet. Stay tuned for oportunities to join in future work sessions.

Come join us this Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon, when will be tidying this particular section of Floodplain Studios -- using logs that had been dumped here to create borders and paths near this little American Hazelnut tree that Kersti Savage just planted. Apparently deer love to eat the American Hazelnut, so she used branches and twigs to make this lovely barrier! So much nicer than the plastic deer fencing we have used elsewhere. DM if you can come work with us Sunday. (Weather permitting -- rain is forecast, but things change!)

A reminder to stop by and join us in making designs in the creek bed with stones, leaves, wood, and whatever else we may find. The water really makes the colors pop! Sunday 4pm-6pm .

DESIGNS IN THE CREEK — Hot weather, cool creek, pretty rocks! Sunday July 26, 4pm-6pm

Join Erika Johnson for loosely guided creative time in the creek at Floodplain Studios! Using rocks, leaves and whatever else we find, we’ll each be creating our own designs using the creek bed as our canvas. The water is quite shallow, but expect to get a little wet! To RSVP, direct message this acct or email [email protected].

I've got to say, I've got mad respect for these Japanese hops -- they are amazing climbers, powerful, capable of wrapping around tall trees and strangling/smothering everything in their path. And they grow amazingly quickly. The more we pull now before they seed, the better things will be for all the native plants that are trying to grow beneath them, and more lovely the space will be to enjoy this time next year.
DM if you can join us today.

Come join us at Floodplain Studios this Sunday, 3:30pm-5:30pm, to help pull more invasive Japanese hops before they go to seed. It is a very satisfying task! And there is a high likelihood you will come across a tiny toad or a weird bug, like this big Eastern-Eyed Click Beetle that showed up today. Direct message to RSVP.
