There’s a quiet shift that happens when something familiar is seen through a different lens.

In this work from Daniel Arsham’s Pokémon Relic series, a universally recognized character is reimagined as a timeless object—one that feels discovered rather than created. The surface opens to reveal crystalline formations, as if the piece has been shaped not just by the artist, but by time itself.

Arsham invites us to consider what endures. What begins as pop culture becomes something iconic, almost monumental—elevated beyond its original context. The piece carries a sense of continuity, where past, present, and future exist all at once.

It’s not about loss—it’s about transformation. A reminder that the symbols we grow up with don’t disappear; they evolve, gaining new meaning as they move through time.

On International Women’s Day, this work by Ajab Bernard Ategwa feels especially powerful.

Ategwa often paints the strength, presence, and vitality of women within contemporary Cameroonian life. In ‘Untitled (Heat)’, the female figure stands confidently against waves of color — radiant, unapologetic, and full of life.

The warmth of the palette echoes the energy women bring to culture, family, and community. A quiet reminder that resilience, beauty, and power often live in the same body.

Celebrating women today — and every day. 🤎

In the work of Ajab Bernard Ategwa, the body becomes a vessel of memory.

Drawing from Cameroon’s rich spiritual traditions, Ategwa layers masks, animals, and human forms into vivid compositions where the ancestral and the contemporary coexist. Spirits, symbols, and stories move through the canvas like living energy.

In Ancestral and Skin Before Spirit, identity unfolds between the physical and the unseen — a reminder that before the modern world, there was lineage, ritual, and spirit.

These striking large-scale works invite collectors into a narrative that is both deeply personal and culturally timeless.

Before modern cities, there was memory. Before progress, there was fire.

Ajab Bernard Ategwa paints Cameroon in layers — markets, masks, movement, and ancestral presence. In this work, the figure becomes a guardian of culture, holding the flame of identity in a rapidly changing world.
Tradition doesn’t disappear.
Someone keeps it burning.

We are honored to open Ajarb’s solo show today — celebrating a powerful voice in contemporary African painting.

Bernard Ajarb Ategwa (b. 1988) is a Cameroonian visual artist who lives and works in Douala, Cameroon’s largest city — a vibrant commercial crossroads shaped by migration and cultural mixing.

Inspired by the energy and chaos of Douala, Ajarb creates monumental, human-scale paintings that capture the pulse of urban life: taxi stands, markets, roadside vendors, bars, and street corners. His works unfold like an infinite visual story — multicolored snapshots of everyday encounters.

With bold black lines, vivid palettes, and a graphic language echoing advertising aesthetics, he portrays figures in close interaction, placing the viewer directly within the scene. Self-taught and deeply rooted in his city, Ajarb has developed a distinct visual code that transforms ordinary street life into powerful, layered compositions.

While many artists build careers abroad, Ajarb remains in Douala — an essential anchor for his practice. Through sharp observation, he moves between painter, photographer, and sociologist — revealing the beauty, complexity, and humanity of contemporary urban Africa.

Join us in celebrating this extraordinary artist. ✨
