Diversity among both wildlife and people make for richer experiences, ecosystems and communities. We are celebrating this diversity for Global Diversity Awareness Month by highlighting some of the Indigenous team members with our international conservation partners at Lion Landscapes.
Zoo New England supports Lion Landscapes' community-led conservation efforts to reduce human-wildlife conflict and conserve lions and other large carnivores living outside protected areas in the Ruaha and Selous-Nyerere landscapes in Tanzania. Their approach combines livestock protection, employment of local community-based liaisons to prevent conflict, community-led wildlife monitoring through camera traps that generate funding for local services, and education and outreach programs. By partnering directly with local communities, Lion Landscapes helps safeguard wildlife across human-dominated landscapes while improving livelihoods and fostering long-term coexistence between people and predators.
