Boston Sculptors Gallery

Boston Sculptors Gallery New England's only gallery focused on contemporary sculpture, in traditional & new media, since 1992

In 1992, a group of 18 sculptor friends and colleagues came together to found Boston Sculptors Gallery. Addressing the scarcity of opportunities to showcase sculpture in New England, the group pooled their resources to advance a mission: that sculpture should be nurtured, celebrated and promoted locally. Boston Sculptors quickly established its reputation as area curators and critics, and the art-

going public, took notice. Just three years after its founding, BSG was named "Boston's best gallery" by Boston Magazine, and the following year the Boston Globe hailed it as "the most innovative gallery around". Nick Capasso, Director of the Fitchburg Art Museum and former Curator of the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, described Boston Sculptors as a "landmark" sculptors' cooperative. Boston Sculptors Gallery offers a second, significant distinction, eschewing the competitive model of commercial galleries in favor of a collaborative system of support and advancement. Boston Sculptors Gallery was founded and continues to operate with the belief that sharing resources and championing one another's creative efforts produce the most fertile ground in which artists can succeed. The Gallery continues to thrive and offer compelling, nationally recognized work based on this core belief.

Here we goooooo!!! While there's still plenty of summer left, we're thinking forward to the Fall season, and to get things started, we're pleased to introduce new member Jeffrey Nowlin, whose first show, "Good Fat", celebrates "the complicated satisfaction that derives from manual fabrication". Using a range of materials, Nowlin cites a wealth of references, offered in a careful balance with foregrounded evidence of the handmade. Opens Thu, Aug 27, w/ reception Fri, Sep 4, 5-8:30pm. Welcome to the fold, Jeffrey!

We're getting ready to start up the next show cycle that will take us into our Fall season (booooo...summer is still in session!). BSG veteran Marilu Swett leads the way, with "Offshoot", her newest outing. Swett draws a clear line between patterns of plant growth and the studio process, where the "manipulation of materials and ideas propagate new work", and generate large and small forms interacting. Opens next Thu, Aug 27, w/ reception Fri, Sep 4, 5-8:30pm. Let's GOOOOOO!

We're REALLY smitten with our current shows...between our summer invitational show, the Wentworth Institute of Technology Industrial Design Student Exhibit (a mouthful, we know!), and our Launchpad guest Eric Stark's "Found & Woven", there's a provocative mix of concept and craft, the likes of which we get really jazzed about! Come celebrate the end-of-term with us and our student-artist-guests tomorrow evening, 5-8pm, or for our event, this Fri, Aug 7, 5-8:30pm.

Our next Launchpad guest prepares to share "Eric Stark: Found and Woven:, opening this Thu, Jul 16. Stark creates amazingly intricate, flowing recreations of found objects in woven sweetgrass. Stark's training as an architect influences a rich understanding of form and structure, in understated-but-still-stunning material transformations. Artist's reception Thu, Jul 23, 5-8pm.

We're super-pleased to host "W.I.T. @ Work: The Art of Industrial Design", the
Wentworth Institute of Technology Student Exhibition. Organized and curated by BSG superstar Dennis Svoronos, the exhibit focuses on the "creative side" of the field, as students strive to develop solutions that move far beyond "products destined for anonymous big box stores". Says Svoronos of the program (where he also teaches!): "the artistry of the program’s approach to Industrial Design never ceases to amaze me.” Opens this Thu, Jul 16, w/opening night celebration, 5-8pm. Free and open to the public!
