Last week, BDA staff member Libby attended and testified at Boston City Hall to opposed budget cuts to the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture. Libby was one of hundreds of artists that showed up to advocate for arts funding in our city and encourage City Council members to reconsider these cuts and the detrimental impact they would have on Boston artists and beyond.

We’re not done! Visit the link in our bio to learn more about these cuts and what you can do to continue opposing them.

Don’t let Boston arts funding get slashed ‼️
Mayor Wu is proposing a 27% cut for Arts and Culture funding. That’s $1 million of resources for artists in our community.

We know that dancers are already the lowest paid artists in Massachusetts. Help BDA support the effort to protest these cuts and ensure that dancers and other arts workers can have a sustainable future in Boston.

Join us TOMORROW, Thursday April 30 at Boston City Hall to show Mayor Wu that Boston artists aren’t backing down. More information on these efforts in our bio!

Shoutout to our Artist Development Panel 🌎🗣️

Connection and collaboration are at the heart of BDA’s mission. During our new Professional Development Forum & Discussion, BDA members and dance leaders shared insights from our pilot program, offering experience, tools and strategies to help artists build sustainable, higher-paying opportunities in dance. Led by dance leaders Aaron Myers & McKersin, this first cohort of five artists exemplified what collaboration looks like in action: building together to bridge industry and community through shared learning, mentorship, and mutual support. We are grateful for every chance to increase strength in the Boston dance community and to highlight incredible work and leadership.

Appreciation post for our Dancer Health Day Wellness Team! 🩺

Last month, Dr. Lauren Elson and her outstanding team from Harvard Medical School led free wellness check-ins at BDA’s annual Dancer Health Day. Participants received personalized wellness screenings and one-on-one consultations with physical therapists, medical doctors, nutritionists, and psychologists who specialize in working with dancers. This collaboration helped artists gain practical insight into injury prevention, recovery, and sustainable practices to support long-term health in dance.

Thank you to this incredible team of professionals for helping keep the Boston dance community moving and creating safely. 💙

We’re thrilled to have such an active and versatile artist joining us for the next ‘end-of’ Summer Series at Canal District Kendall! Join JD Davis on Tuesday 9/16 for an amazing class in The Lindy Hop! 🎺💜🎶

📍Where: .district.kendall
300 Athenaeum St. Cambridge

⏰When: Tuesday Sept. 16
5:30-7pm

🎶What: Class includes a 1 hour-lesson followed by 30 minutes of dance exploration & social time. Oarticoants will learn about the Lindy Hop; a quick paced partner-style social dance rooted in Black vernacular dance traditions of the early 20th century and continues its popularity today. Lindy Hop emphasizes a grounded pulse, a strong sense of musicality, and a blend of footwork that makes up the foundation of this spectacular dance style. Focusing on connection, JD’s class will engage versatile movements, technical partnering skills, individual expression, and connect them all to the ancestral lineage of swing & jazz music in a historical context.

🌟About the Artist:
JD Davis (they/them) is an arts professional with specialization in dance, music and acting. They love helping people express themselves and decompress from the stressors of life while in community with others. One of the many ways they practice that is by sharing how to dance The Lindy Hop, an African-American dance form from Harlem in the context of a living Black culture. Whether it’s through sharing stories, history, music, or corny jokes, JD leads their class with intentionality while connecting with others to deepen our understanding of the culture of dance being explored. Through this, we deepen our understanding of ourselves, eachother, and take part in a form of collective healing and liberation. Follow them on Instagram:
