I first heard Tom Petty when I was 10 years old — "Damn the Torpedoes" — and I wore that record out. Eight years later, "Full Moon Fever" dropped and "I Won't Back Down" became the soundtrack to my life. At 18, that song wasn't just music — it was a promise I made to myself.

Forty-six years of making music later, I've played over 1,000 shows. I headlined President Clinton's farewell concert for 10,000+ people. I co-wrote a national TV commercial for KIA Motors. I've been an ASCAP songwriter for decades.

And then I went silent for 6 years. Life came at me hard — divorce, financial losses, the kind of hits that don't just knock you down, they try to convince you to stay there.
I'm not staying there.

"Standing Tall" is the song I wrote when I stopped letting the hard seasons define me. It's Heartland Rock — raw, honest, and built on every lesson Tom Petty ever taught me about not backing down.

On February 21, 2026, salsa lost 1 of its main architects. Willie Colón — trombonist, composer, arranger, producer, and one of the defining voices of Fania Records and the New York salsa movement — passed away peacefully at 75, surrounded by his family.

For those of us who write Latin music, Willie wasn't just an artist we admired. He was the blueprint. He showed us that a salsa song could carry the weight of a novel. That a trombone line could narrate a life. That rhythm and social conscience weren't opposites — they were partners.

Three recordings shaped the way Solon Z approaches songwriting: the haunting romantic tension of "Gitana," the cinematic street storytelling of "Pedro Navaja" on the legendary Siembra album with Rubén Blades, and the emotional restraint of "Sin Poderte Hablar." Each proved that salsa songwriting is one of the most demanding — and rewarding — crafts in music.

FAREWELL TO MATTHEWS ARENA: Where One Night Changed Everything

They’re tearing down Matthews Arena at Northeastern University – and with it, a piece of my history.

January 2001. My band was chosen to perform President Clinton’s farewell show at my alma mater. As we played for thousands packed into that historic arena, I looked out and thought, “This is really happening.”

Mid-performance, I see Ted Kennedy’s aide making his way through the crowd. Kennedy himself sends a message – a big thumbs up and shouts: “GOOD JOB!”

But the moment I’ll never forget came backstage…

President Clinton invited us back for photos. As we’re standing there, still buzzing from the performance, he looks at me with that famous Arkansas drawl and grins: “Oh my God, I just LOVE your Elvis!”

I performed for a sitting President. At my own university. Surrounded by friends I’d worked with at Transpo between classes. In a building that had stood since 1910.

Some venues are just buildings. Matthews Arena was where 17,000 dreams were made – from hockey championships to concerts to moments like mine that seemed impossible until they happened.

Buildings come down. Memories don’t.

Thank you, Matthews Arena.
