A year ago we launched TRC Academy. Now we're in year two.

I keep thinking about where we started. Artists showing up with talent and nothing else. No map. No industry contacts. No idea what a rate card even was.

Now they're walking out with real skills. The kind employers pay for.

Crystal Torres. Nelly Protoolz. Tonya Butler. These instructors show up and teach as it matters. It does.

None of this happens without the New Commonwealth Fund believing in this before we had any proof it would work. And without people like Bithiah Carter, who looked at this and saw more than another program. She saw a bridge into Boston's creative economy.

I didn't think this was possible a year ago. Now I'm watching it happen.

I'm grateful. That's the plain truth of it.

Meet NellyProtoolz, the instructor leading Audio Engineering and Music Production for TRC Academy.

Nelly has spent 20 years producing, engineering, and teaching in Boston. Students won’t just learn how to use the tools—they’ll learn from someone who understands the craft, the work, and what it takes to grow in the music industry.

TRC Academy is a free, 12-week program for Boston youth ages 14–24.

TRC Academy is a free educational and workforce development program that was created to give Boston youth access to the knowledge, tools, and industry professionals who can help them turn their creativity into real opportunities. These are four of the more than 100 young people who completed the Academy in our first year.

Open to Boston youth over 14. Applications close Friday, September 11. Classes begin Monday, September 14 for 12 weeks.

We know this story. When the Sound Museum closed, hundreds of artists lost their creative home. Many of them found one here.

That’s the work: 108 studios and workspaces. 3,000+ artists and creatives using them every month. 15 years of proof that when Boston invests in creative infrastructure, artists stay, build, and succeed.

Creative space isn’t a luxury. It isn’t an amenity. It’s infrastructure — the same as roads, transit, housing. Boston’s creative economy runs on it.
