Hey friends! We're still brimming with gratitude from all the support we received during this weekend's event. We heard from five visiting artists regarding how our current exhibition The Lost Paintings fits into their larger body of work, listened to local musicians pay homage to well-known Arab composers, and of course, we connected with all of you throughout the night!

This weekend was further proof of what we already know: we're interested in hosting rigorous conversations centered around art and culture, and we want to continue to bring various creative audiences/makers together whether they're activists, artists, musicians, or organizers.

And in terms of behind-the-scenes work, this event was further proof of something else: events like these require many dollars to make happen. Payments to and travel for visual artists, payments to musicians, expenses for food and drink, gear rentals, print materials, planning time... The line items can amass like no other. We want to keep doing programming like this, but we can only do it if we have the funds! With this in mind, we are making a small request of you, just in time for Giving Tuesday on December 2nd, a national effort to support local non-profits like us.

If you make a donation to UVA or become a recurring donor between now and Giving Tuesday (December 2nd), you will be entered into a giveaway that features gifts from local favorites such as The Brattle, The Coolidge Corner Theater, Black Sheep Bagel cafe, and Clear Flour Bakery. Here are five prizes on offer thanks to our gracious donors:
Gift card to Black Sheep Bagel Cafe
Gift card to Clear Flour Bakery
Two movie tickets and two popcorn coupons from The Coolidge Corner Theater (first pair)
Two movie tickets and two popcorn coupons from The Coolidge Corner Theater (second pair)
1 one-year Regular level membership to The Brattle Theatre complete with 12 free passes, discounts on food and merch, and invitations to special screenings

Again, everyone who signs up to be a recurring donor and those who make a gift between now and December 2nd will be entered into a raffle to win one of the prizes above!! Five winners will be contacted through email and asked to pick up a prize at the gallery during regular hours—first come, first served! We hope that you'll take this time to contribute to our mission and invest in another year of celebrating Boston-based creators, curating contemporary visual art, hosting musicians and sound artists, and serving as a gathering space for our artistic community.

We are honored to host  “The Lost Paintings” opening on Saturday, October 25 in conjunction with Unbound Visual Arts.

This extraordinary traveling exhibition gathers 53 artists from Palestine and its diaspora across time and borders. In the words of the exhibition curators, the artists “do not reconstruct the past, but reclaim it.”

Louise Bonar (1930 – 2025) was a remarkable individual whose dedication to community affairs and civic activism left an indelible mark on Allston-Brighton. Her love and concern for the community were truly phenomenal. Louise was the first Coordinator of the Heritage Museum guides and served as a role model for leading a life of civic engagement. She was a creative and active participant in numerous activities, contributing to the neighborhood's success.
Louise's involvement in local affairs was extensive. She was a long-serving Brighton-Allston Historical Society Board member, a League of Women Voters member, and an active participant in the Brighton Garden Club. She also served as a voter poll warden at the Oak Square YMCA and was a great friend and supporter of the Oak Square Common and the Oak Square Faneuil Library.
As a founding member of Unbound Visual Arts in 2012 and a published poet, Louise's contributions to the arts were significant. She was an experienced management consultant, educator, and longtime community activist dedicated to neighborhood improvements in Allston-Brighton. Louise also served on the Board of Directors of the Allston-Brighton Community Development Corporation and the Brighton-Allston Historical Society & Heritage Museum. She was a former staff member for Brighton Main Streets and a founding member of the Brighton Historical Society in 1968.
In the early 1980s, Louise was an original member of the now-defunct Allston-Brighton Arts Council. In 2013, she organized UVA's first poetry event, "Poems Among Paintings," which featured 13 poets, including Boston's then Poet Laureate, Sam Cornish. This event was held amidst two of UVA's exhibitions at the Harvard Ed Portal galleries. In 2015, she was on the planning committee that organized the Farewell Tribute to Sam Cornish, an event co-sponsored by UVA, the City of Boston, and the Harvard Ed Portal, which attracted over 100 guests. Louise also curated the "Monica McAlpine: Waterscape Edges" exhibit at the Faneuil Library Art Gallery.
Louise Bonar's legacy of civic activism, community involvement, and dedication to the arts will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

Unbound Visual Arts remembers Danielle Legros Georges, beloved poet, author, and professor, who sadly passed away this month. In 2017, Danielle recited her compelling poetry at UVA’s fifth-anniversary celebration at the Josephine A. Fiorentino Community Center, making it a very inspiring and wonderful evening. Danielle will be greatly missed by UVA and members of the creative community. Mayor's Office of Arts & Culture Boston Harvard Ed Portal Lesley University Charlesview, Inc.
